I work in a car repair shop, but I'm mostly in the electrical part of cars and administrative stuff, not mechanical.
I'm at my second TFSI Audi, had a 1.8 TFSI CABD engine, which had to be rebuild from start, but I only had the piston rings put in new. It had slight misfire issues over it's lifetime, but I think it was only noticeable when you knew what to look for. Anyways, I've sold it last year, because I wanted more power.
Now I have a 2.0T CNCD, as I was specifically looking for EA888 gen3 to not have the bad pistons with the oil consumption, but alas, this has a very good price and a very neglected owner, so I jumped at the opportunity.
This time around, we've rebuilt the engine, bored the cylinders, new pistons also of course.
Currently I have some minor issues I'm working on:
• sometimes I get this (I am hoping it's because the oil that was in it will take a few thousand kms to clean out the catalyst and the 02 sensors):
o 14916 - Catalyst System; Bank 1
o P0420 00 [01100000] - Efficiency Below Threshold
o Intermittent - Not Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
• my concerns are:
o 14867 - Bank 1: CMP Sensor 3 (G300) / Engine Speed Sens (G28)
o P0017 00 [00100000] - Incorrect Correlation
o Intermittent - Not Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
o
o 14868 - Bank 1: CMP Sensor (G40) / Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
o P0016 00 [00100000] - Incorrect Correlation
o Intermittent - Not Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
My colleague swears that the timing is perfect, he triple checked it. So I have swapped the 2 magnets between them to find out which is faulty because the adjustment angles were off.

Now I only have:
14867 - Bank 1: CMP Sensor 3 (G300) / Engine Speed Sens (G28)
P0017 00 [01100000] - Incorrect Correlation
Intermittent - Not Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
My gut tells me to swap out the other one too, especially since there is only one code now.
I will probably do that, but this next question is the whole reason I am writing.
After rebuilding, the car runs okay, but seems sluggish. My colleague, who did the rebuild, and rebuilt his own 1.8T TFSI is saying that the rings have to harden and pave the walls of the cylinders and the car should run fine after about 3000 kilometers, as his did too. Like it got a new lease on life after all of a sudden.
Everywhere I've asked, nobody can say for certain. Maybe it's only because of the magnets?
Please, share your experiences with engine rebuilds or magnet issues.
Thank you!
