Oof! What Bordom said--compression test should be on deck. Hopefully a silver lining here.

You guys think I could compression test it with the valve cover off? I’m half tempted to run it and see what the valve train is doing and if the noise has changed.

I don't see why you couldn't. Pull the fuel pump fuse and you should be fine!

FWIW I've run audis with the valve covers off to diagnose valvetrain noise.... I just put the cheap harbor freight moving blankets over the fenders to catch any splashing lmao. Do have to clean up the harness and coil packs to make sure you don't drop any dirt in there but it looks pretty cool when its running like that... So cranking it without starting should be just fine xD

This is exactly my plan of attack, down to the blanket idea. Although, I think my son has it from working on his B8. Anywho, I’ll pull the fuse for the fuel pump, clean everything up, and cover the engine bay with something. I may also scope the cylinder bores while cranking.

What are anyone’s thoughts on this being an exhaust leak?

Had a friend come over and we spent a little time on Project Roxanne. I wish I felt more confident about the direction I wanted to go with this car, but I don’t. I kind of do, but I don’t. We ran compression tests on Bank 2 and fiddled with the valve train. So here’s what we found:

So I can’t tell if Cylinder 6 is the culprit or if this is coincidental. There was no noticeable damage outside of what the other cylinders had. I did notice the top of piston 8 was kind of shiny.

We put everything back together and fired her back up. Still ticking. It very much sounds like it’s coming from the rear of the engine with all the covers and everything off. Curious if the flex plate is involved at all, now.
