Question Belts screeching, wd-40 temp removes noise as noise returns, sign of trouble?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Took the following video after hearing the belts screeching while idling, all noises disappear above 15mph or if a quick squirt of wd-40 is applied like in the video.....

....but the fix is a temp fix and 5 mins later the belt is back to being noisy, this isn't good I would presume, anyone have any insights while I search the forums of what might be my issue or about to be my issue?

    thanks in advance

Most likely an idler pulley or tensioner on its way out. Just chased this on another car, and ended up being the tensioner even though the noise seemed to be coming from elsewhere.

thank you for the response, I actually haven't driven the car until today since posting, and the noise is noticeably louder/worse, which frankly scares and I'd like to get addressed sooner than later...

... @simrag how difficult is this to chase down, I'm curious if there's a sequential method of checking that checks easy fixes first before I'd need to involve a shop, or is this one of those jobs a shop can do so much easier it's not worth the hassle? I'm going to do some research on installs and see if I can answer this myself but you seem a heck more knowledgeable so any advice is appreciated, cheers.

Just a heads up you should avoid spraying any grease/oil/lubricants on the belt as this will cause even more slippage and can swell the rubber, which will eventually destroy the belts.
The correct way to do this test is by spraying water with a spray bottle or rubbing bar soap on the side and grooved part of the belt. If the squeal quiets then it's likely the belt. Although that's not to say there could still be an issue with the drive belt components (pulleys/tensioners).

If I were in your position I would replace both belts (accessory and supercharger) with quality replacements (genuine audi/continental/gates) from rockauto or fcpeuro. Then, while they are both off, inspect your tensioners and pulleys for and in-and-out play or wobbling. Also, spin them by hand and listen for any noise.
A good pulley will have ZERO noise (or very close to it), and have absolutely ZERO play. Some idler pulleys will have the tiniest bit of play even when new though.

To change these it will be easiest to put the car in service position if you know how to do it, although it can be done without, it will just be much more difficult and annoying, and you'll probably need certain tools.
There are a few good videos on youtube, start there first.
I haven't done it myself yet, but it's likely that the hardest part of this job is putting it in service position (which isn't very hard).

    .
Roger that. I was just going to use the APR dual pulley setup for my stage 3 or 034's DP setup , I think you can use something like this to avoid needing to remove the bumper https://www.goapr.com/products/engin...parts/MS100025
