At the time there were 12 people ahead of me for a M3. A few months later finally the M2 was going to be available but I already pre-traded my 8V RS3 for a 8Y RS3. One of the reasons was the high trade-in value and the second reason because there was going to be (again) a list of people ahead of me for an order of a M2 and the dealer wouldn't have a definite build date.
I always maintained that the S58 engine is one step above the DAZA, two turbos, more displacement, 1 extra cylinder and fully forged engine. I also love the M2 looks but I will leave this in blank because it is just a personal opinion and subjective to each person's own opinion. The "flaw" that I find on the M2 is the weight, not too nimble at 3800lbs. Also, some options are expensive, a decently optioned M2 can go easily $6000-$10000. If I ever have a total loss on my turbo blue I would absolutely dive in for a M2 with the upcoming X drive. It is a Porsche performance at 60% of the cost. What I don't like is that I heard that BMW now can go $220/h+ for maintenance and the S58 doesn't have much room to work on it. On that matter I think that the DAZA is way more mechanic friendly.
this is crazy, it would turn me off too... after deciding to part with a lot of cash then they tell us sorry 12 people come before you for allocation. my dealer did tell me it takes over 12 months from them anyhow, but they were willing to build me my m2 with no wait, and about a week before I placed the order I found a 24 locally with 1000 miles the exact spec as we were going to build... got lucky I guess... this was september last year so who knows if the market is different now lol.
if the m2 had 4 doors I would have gotten it over the rs3, but then I guess it would be an M3 lol... and to me the price difference changes things. m2 and rs3 are the same price, at least when I bought both in september, m3 is no where near 70k. I cant even find a used one for below 80k (late model and low mileage with auto)... yes I look at the time just in case something crazy pops up like in the other thread here (forgot his name but he found an insane x3m british green build).
all that being said, i am happy with my rs3... but since I use them as daily and for work, at least 25=30k/year, i try to swap out at least before warranty ends and before it tanks in value with crazy mileage, which is less than 2 years so I'm always planning what is next hahah... if I had to make that choice today, I'm not sure what I would do. in my mind if I had to get something today, I think it would be one of these:
new rs3 (if they ever appear lol)
rs6 avant (if I could afford it)
rs5 (maybe, I don't know much about this one, perhaps pre owned so semi affordable but then at those numbers it brings me to the next choice lol)
x3m or m3 (pre owned if reasonably price and low mileage)
ct4v (not thrilled about caddy or v6 but it is interesting based on what I've seen)
charger (if it gets a v8 back by then as I'm just not sure I can swallow the I6TT from dodge lol)
dark horse (but man 2 doors is tough when you're my age, and then if a 2 door, how could I not get the m2 over a dark horse haha!)
there really aren't a lot of great choices out there today.
I don't even know what else I would buy today, there are so few choices
