Are you sure they replaced your rack? The software update will greatly diminish the effect of Dynamic steering almost to where it seems the same as the Comfort setting. If yours is like that, they may have just updated the software instead of giving you a new rack. Unless of course they gave you a new rack AND the software update which makes zero sense. If that is what they did, the only way to get the Dynamic steering feel back is with a new rack install because the software update is not reversible (great engineering there audi).

The service advisor and warranty docs state rack replacement. Also, not much difference between Comfort and Dynamic so it sounds like they did both :(

Could be the new racks come that way.

I have recently experienced a similar issue with my car. 2009 A4. I noticed some sloppy steering almost like I am drifting on a slippery snow patch around a turn. I notice this mostly around corners but do not experience the "notchy or rutted" steering as mentioned above. This seems to happen when I am coasting in gear (6MT) and decelerating around turns.
When I am turning, I hold my steering wheel at one position. When I need more turn, I turn it more and nothing happens. I need to turn it excessively to then turn my vehicle the desired amount.

I'm not sure if the above issue applies to me as I am not sure if I have the same bits and pieces as the S4.
It almost felt like my steering fluid was low/ there was an issue in the pressure in my power steering line.
But as mentioned above, it made me very nervous and almost hesitant to drive but does not happen all the time.
Super weird. And the first time I am really noticing this issue after 2.5yrs of ownership ~25000mi. (at 83k now)

Any insight or suggestions is appreciated.

From my experience when they change the steering rack on my S4 2013 the feeling between Dynamic and Comfort changed, is not as noticeable as before, you do notice more at highway speeds, but around town not that much difference.

A4 2009 does not have electric steering assist, therefore I do not think the information on this thread applies to you at all.

I think I might be experiencing this steering issue.
Is there a way to tell what electronic steering software version my car is currently on?

I had this problem with my 2013 S4 since it was brand new. The car would wander and pull all over the road. After lots of dealer visits and elevating the issue to Audi of America, here is what finally fixed it a couple of weeks ago:

1. New steering rack (Part #: 8K1423055AN)
2. New tires (OEM Continentals are absolute garbage)
3. Complete 4 wheel alignment

My car drives straight as an arrow now with no tugging, wandering, or tramlining. Any one of the 3 fixes above would not have completely solved the problem (I had the tires replaced a week or two after the rack), so you will have to spend money on tires especially if you are running the stock Continentals. Driver Steering Recommendation is still enabled on my car, so I wouldn't consider that the proper fix (it will help in the interim though). Hope this helps.

Wow, all this time and owners are STILL having this problem???

SC, I have it in Winchester, VA on a 2013 RS5 without adaptive cruise option. I'm not sure if I noticed this before putting on a set of 19" wheels/tires I use for track days. Over time, it seems like this "floaty steering" issue only happens to my car in the mornings as the car is coming up to operating temperature. Switching from Comfort to Dynamic mode seems to help, but it could just be the tighter feel/ratio.

What is your thought on being local? Work at a dealer by any chance?

I took it to the dealership today. They recognized what I was talking about and said they have seen it before. They took my car in and later got a call that the steering rack would be replaced.
My warranty runs out soon and I really couldn't ignore the issue anymore. If you want, PM me for more details

So I kinda of had noticed the problem on my S4 last year going to NY and NC. I changed the setting in Vagcom and thought it might of worked. Well I just drove down to FL from Maryland and about 6 to 7 hrs into the drive i noticed it all over the road. By the time I got to Jacksonville it was like a old caddy swaying in the wind. This is in Dynamic by the way. Only thing stock on the suspension are the shocks. I have every other add on available. Now it's really bad... I did a launch tonight and it wasn't as tight as it was before.

Seems like most people were helped by getting the new rack installed. I know it worked for me.

What do I need to say and show to get this replaced under warranty? Any key buzz words or symptoms to play up?

I had to get Audi of America involved after putting up with the steering issues for 3 years with no help from any of the dealerships I took my car to. A case manager got in touch with me and had me bring my car back to my selling dealership for another look, which resulted in a brand new steering rack. There is really no buzz word or term you can use to get them to do anything. Your best bet is to contact corporate and let them know about the issue. When they assign you a case manager, that individual gets in touch with the dealer and coordinates the whole process. I've found that the dealership takes you more seriously when you go this route and it actually helped me get the timing chain TSB done (my car was having startup rattle) as well. Hope this helps.

This is exactly how it worked for me as well.

My 2013 A4 had the software update back when it was new. I just bought the car a few weeks ago and feel a little notchiness at the 12 o'clock position only very slightly. I tried turning the wheel all the way to the left and hold etc., it seemed to help. Gonna have the dealership look at it while it's in for a recall next week, my buddy thinks it might be the intermediate steering shaft.

My dealer just replaced the intermediate shaft, but not the rack. Unfortunately I'll probably have to wait until late fall to see if the problem has been truly addressed.

have you disabled DSR in vagcom? it seems to have worked for me for the most part

I disabled mine and like it much better now. I never had any clicking / notching with my wheel though. I'm also willing to consider the DSR change effect is all in my head too. lol.

I'm in the market for a CPO S4.. I wonder if I could convince the dealer to do some/all of these fixes as part of the deal if the car is experiencing the highway wandering. The alignment obviously shouldn't be a big deal, but the other stuff I'm not sure.

All the 13s I've driven with drive select had the wandering problem. Come to think of it I might have drove one without ADS that had the problem but my memory is foggy.

This is one of the major hesitations I've had with buying this car. A car this expensive and "performance inspired" shouldn't have steering problems like this!

Hi, i have disabled DSR in vagcom two times , one with first rack with 511 software, and one with this new rack..... nothing to do...... the problem is always present.....
i want try to disable ADS.....
anyone can help me? 44 steering disable carisma....?

The clicking or ticking on turning the wheel was present in my s4 as well. the intermediate shaft resolved that particular problem (clicking/ticking/noise as you turn the steering wheel. happens at a stop).

is this problem still rampant? almost 60 pages of steering issue discussion?

The real thing and that audi can not solve the problem and does not even know the cause

In my case, have encountered the problem, I in my steering feel a step of effort both to the right and to the left,
I replaced the steering box, now the central hub, have all the VAG logs with the car turned on and off ....
But they do not know how to do that.
They change everything hoping to solve the problem

they still dont know the cause? there seems to be quite a few fixes in here (most notably the steering rack) but I agree it doesn't seem to work for everyone. Would it be possible to get some updates from people who were experiencing this problem and "fixed" it? I don't want to buy a car with the troubles described here!

Sorry for crashing the S4 forums, but this has been a problem since I bought my CPO A4. Looks like the PO took it in for warranty service a few times for steering issues, but apparently none of those visits fixed it (didn't seem like they replaced the rack). The issue is the steering is super notchy sometimes... On the highway, it can get quite annoying. The dealer has never been able to properly replicate it (lol, Audi has the worst dealer network I've ever dealt with...) so it looks like it's up to me to find a rack to replace it with. Seems pretty straightforward to replace, surprisingly. If I can find a used rack from a later model A4, it might be my next project.

i just disabled the DSR on the weekend.... i have only driven about 15km (9 miles) since, but the difference was immediate and substantial. my car only has 20,000 km (12,500 miles) on it. i was ready to get rid of it, but after reading so much here about the steering notchiness, decided to try this fix first. so far so good. still not as good as hydraulic steering, but so much better than it was. if the steering stays as it feels now, i will keep it longer, and may add a cr-15 as well.
it is a joke that audi has this issue.
almost as stupid as the squealing brakes (which i may change on my own and seek reimbursement from the dealer).

Reason #2834 to own a VCDS cable. I need to get around to ordering one of those...

Disabled dsr and the notchy feeling is still there..have the cr-15 on the way

Disabled DSR about 1000mi ago. I can also attest to the greatness that comes with it. What a difference! Only issue is that when scanning after an error code shows, but that clears easily.

is this something that can only be fixed (by Audi) under warranty? faulty manufacturing?

Purchased a VCDS cable right after making my last post... Between enabling ADS and disabling DSR, the car has been transformed. There's still a little notch at the center, but it's been greatly reduced. Where it really matters is the linearity when steering through a turn. It's liquid smooth, and makes the car a lot more fun to drive. I have a feeling that a future combination of a rear sway bar, CR-15 and some high quality summer tires will make this car one hell of a canyon carver.

If you're having this issue and haven't gotten any help from the dealer, get a VCDS and switch this terrible feature off!
