My A6 allroad

Since this forum seems to be primarily rs6 content, figured I'd mix it up.

This is replacing my x3m. I picked up a used TT RS and figured the family car could be slower but more comfortable.

Though after driving it, the engine feels like it's begging to be released, so hopefully it gets some aftermarket support. The intake alone looks so restricted.

First projects up are to black out some of the trim, and get some tint. Also ordered a flat bottom wheel, the stock wheels feels so thin in my hands. My plan is pretty much to build out a s6 avant.

Thanks everyone, I live near Somerset.

Following - thinking about picking up one of these myself.

Only a couple days in, but have really enjoyed it so far. Such a smooth ride. Engine has good pickup, though not really fun acceleration. You step on the gas, and it quietly gets going. A tune should make it just right.

I'm a lil curious how the 2020 models with all wheel steering handle. It does feel heavy/long in the turns. But I don't think that's a fair critique for me to make, it's not a sports car so it being able to really take turns more aggressively just isn't a goal.

I need to slightly control myself, I want to make it sportier but not get away from the main reason I got it. A really comfortable family car.

Shucks with that model there really isn’t anything that you would need to do lol. Definitely the family will enjoy riding in that daily. :)

Haha you would think that, but it's never actually true, at least for me. I can't help but mod the car, just something about making it uniquely your own that appeals to me.

Well I can easily see your point, but I just figured you would mod that TT as opposed to the family mobile lol.

I think it will be a few visual changes, and a few performance changes. I really do want a valved exhaust. Hoping awe puts something together with a rear diffuser. Past that stage 1, intake, and maybe front strut and I think it will be a done deal.

The one thing I really love about the unitronic tt rs tune(apr might do the same, don't know much about it). Is it's fairly calm in D, it wakes up in S. I would want the same kinda setup.

Time will tell.

I’m with you on mod theory... I’ll probably wait on the tune, but I agree it could use it. I can’t imagine what exhausts are going to cost for all these cars that require body mods to make them happen. I’ll probably wait for the tune and throw in a downpipe at the same time. Have you taken a look under the car? Fingers crossed there are some resonators to bypass...

Also super jealous you have cars available! There isn’t a single A6 AR with lux pack in the south east right now.

I haven't been under the car(or in the car with all the snow we got). Yea I was trying to look for some other of the more recent models with fake exhausts to see what people have come up with. I should check the sq5 I'm sure someone has sold something. But yea I assume it's gonna need the original bumper cut, definitely a pricey move.

Yea looks like the awe exhaust for the sq5, just points down and doesn't go past the bumper.

I guess we are moving to a future where fake exhausts are a thing.

Looking at our bumpers it doesn't really give us much of an option without some serious surgery. Honestly it might be easier to fit an S6 avant rear bumper and have a body shop figure out the fender flares. There definitely isn't an easy option... unless you are a fan of center exit!

That 20th green looks fantastic as matte Roger! Looks great!

Curious on your thoughts on moving from the X3M to the A6 allroad? Pros/Cons.

I've been looking at the X3M, allroad and or getting another s6 as a daily replacement - love the rs6 but didn't want to spend that on a daily.

The X3M is a really amazing car. I went from the RS5 SB to it. The RS5 looking back was probably a better all around car though. The X3M is more fun to drive than the rs5 or A6 IMO but it comes at a really steep cost. The drive quality is really bad. I've had a m4, m5, rs5, and TT RS, all sports cars, and all had far drive quality. A lot of the X3M owners are really touchy about the subject, and will say things like "You don't know how a M is supposed to drive", an absolute garbage response. The problem is the car is too tall for the suspension set up they went with, and it manifests by how the car bounces up and down on roads that aren't smooth. When I first got it, the first day I had massive buyers remorse as I was being bounced about in the drivers seat. I never had a drink in the cup holders, cause it would splash all over the place. That said, you could take corners at high speeds, and I'm sure it defied logic on the track. But too me it's meant to be a fun sports vehicle that doubles as a family car, and it didn't deliver.

I replaced the springs with MSS springs, and that made a world of difference. I've never lowered a car to find it more comfortable, it changed the spring rate so it wasn't bouncing so much. I was fairly happy at that point. About a year later I was able to get my hands on a used TT RS. Driving it felt wayy more comfortable than the x3m. So i found myself in the place where I wanted to drive the TT when I was alone, and when I was with the family, I was driving an uncomfortable SUV that was bad on gas. When I got the X3M I got a really stellar deal, so when I started to think about getting rid of it, I was really close to a clean swap with the A6.

When I drove the A6 it so so much more comfortable than the X3. It's drastically under powered, and steering isn't anywhere near as sharp. The A6 feels like a big car, the x3, really felt like a sedan. The A6 is a lot more spacious as well. I'm 6'4 and nothing fit behind me in the x3, second row space is better in the A6.

The A6 is quick, but just no where near the s58 engine. The s58 is really an amazing engine, the new M3 is going to be amazing. But my plan is as parts come out, I'll tune the A6, and it'll be fast enough to be enjoyable as a daily, and the TT RS will be what I drive when I really want to play around some. To be fair though I tuned the TT and it still doesn't feel as playful as the x3m, the x3 is more rear biased and torquey, it makes for a fun drive. But that really does fade quickly.

These are my thoughts on it, I test drove the x3m and honestly I was blinded by how good the engine was, and ignored all the downsides. I would really try to drive it several times to make sure it's what you want. If the ride doesn't bother you, then I'd really recommend it. But I love wagons, and haven't regretted the A6 for a second. Every time I look at it, I'm happy. With a few bolt ons, it's going to be my perfect family car, The rs6 is almost certainly better, but I would have been to anal about it at the price point, I don't want to be to bothered by mud in the back seat. Also the adjustable height is a game changer for me. I drive in the lowest setting, but during snow storms, I got to max height, and the clearance is pretty decent. Final disclaimer, there is no theatrics to the A6. It's super quiet, and capable. I need some noise, so hopefully a decent exhaust comes out. So also depending on your taste, you might be waiting for some time for parts. Right now parts just don't exist, and don't seem to be a priority. 034, mentioned they have a lot planned. Hopefully.

Looks great. Is that a matte pdf or is it matte factory paint? Also, can you take a pick of the roof rack bars? Are they flush or do that extend beyond the roof rail attachment clamps?

In the same boat as you, although I attempted to use an RS3 as a daily and to drop the kids off at school in the mornings. It was a disaster. went through 3 wheels and tires with these terrible roads, had to drive around with a full size spare in trunk which meant having to put their musical instruments in the front passenger seat. The RS3 is a fantastic vehicle BUT with 3 kids is a hassle. I had looked at the A6 Allroad prior to the RS3 and pulled the pin on the RS3 only to seriously regret it this winter.

The Allroad is a great place to be as far as a commuter and family chores. I would like to do some things to it, an aggressive set of summer wheels 21" or 22" and throw on a nice cargo box. I would have to find a new home if I brought an RS6 home and would be in the same boat as far as destroying tire and wheels with these terrible roads.

Sounds like you are a prime candidate for some fatties! ha, true luxury is not having a single worry about pot holes no matter how big.

Side note, anything done to your Cayman? We have a 2015 in the family that I believe will be making its way to my garage. Any suspension must haves? I hear camber plates are a must.

Very true, will explore that option also! Contemplating 21" S7 reps/Michelin Pilot Sports and either Thule or Skiguard for the roof.

The Cayman has a BBi Rollbar awaiting to go in, may tune it in the future. Have not taken a hard look at the suspension just yet, working on getting a garage built and will start digging in at that point.

I bet your stock wheels would look really good and totally different if they were powdercoated... Is the plan to still use the RS wheels?

Yea they'd probably look really good even as is against the green. I actually have the RS wheels getting powder coated. Gonna keep them two tone black and bronze. They have a bit more gap between the spokes which should show off the calipers. Or at least I hope so, if it doesn't come out the way I pictured, I might swap back to stock.
