DIY- Coil Pack "Hold Down" Brackets
So I had a coilpack go out last week that led to a melted coil socket. Long story short, When the coil blew I was in a spot that I couldn't get off the road. When I did, coil had started to smolder and burn. Nothing but cosmetic damage, but still annoying. I have since replaced all 4 coils with revision R's
Socket. YIKES!! New coil and it works just fine. Plan to replace soon just in case.

In my research about which coilpacks to order, I found a bit of info about coilpacks "popping up" I am not sure if this is what happened to me, but thought that it wouldn't hurt to be careful. I was inspired by the brackets on ECS, and am not trying to hurt their sales, but I couldn't justify spending the extra $45 to get them. These are nowhere as nice, but fit snugly with the OEM type coils that do not bolt down.
Here's what you need to do the job:
• 0.5" aluminum flatbar
• Pliers to bent the aluminum
• 8 M6 socket head bolts
• 1 hour
• 1 beer
Drawing of what I set out to make:

The Brackets mostly done:

Installed in engine:

I'll paint them eventually, but I ran out of high temp paint doing my valve cover.

I can only attest to these working with the OEM push type coils, but it would be easy enough to fab up something for a different type... Anyway, hope this helps someone out.

Looks cool but not needed for the B6...if your coils are popping up, your plugs have a issue.
Re: DIY- Coil Pack "Hold Down" Brackets
i think your time to beer ratio is a little off
nice, clean install [up]

Yeah, all the stuff I read about "popping coils" was from the b5 forum I think. After messing up my socket, I just got paranoid. Figured it couldn't hurt.

Just to clarify, coilpack pop up is due to loose spark plugs. The combustion gasses leaking pressurize the coilpack well, and push the coilpack upwards. The fix is to properly torque the spark plugs.
Nice brackets anyway!
