Hi there, I'm using obdeleven. After a wheel alignment i tried a g85 calibration and it won't beep at full lock or work at all but gave me lots of codes I dident have before for steering, ESP, Sports differential ect. Looking at the SAS it appears to have a blue mark on it like highlighter like its been replaced. If it's not coded to the car will that explain why the g85 calibration fails? And does anyone know how to code to the car using OBDeleven?

The G85 is built into the J527 in the MLB era. Don't believe the J527 is part of the CP system in the MLB era. So replacing it should just be a direct swap (and then code it, should the new unit be coded differently than the original unit). Don't swap it if you can't confirm the coding is the same and have no means to fix it (ie, you don't have OBDeleven PRO). What kind of value are you seeing for the steering angle? Is it something nuts like 1000°? Yeah, lots of things are going to be very unhappy if they don't have a legit steering angle value to work with. I find it very unlikely that just a wheel alignment would cause this; and why bother with a G85 calibration for a wheel alignment anyway?

I have obdeleven pro, the values are normal. Like 0.26 ect and they read when turning the wheel. The sensor is not faulty to my knowledge I just can't get rid of the codes created after trying to calibrate, it's always prudent to calibrate the SAS after a wheel alignment or battery disconnect. I think before I had the car someone replaced the SAS sensor. I've owned 2 years with no issues untill I tried to calibrate which made me belive it was not coded to the car?

You don't say if this is a B8.0 or B8.5. B8.5 has the extra complexity of the J500 electric power steering module (addr 44). Does the car have dynamic steering?
In what module did you invoke the basic setting, and what basic setting did you invoke?
I haven't done a steering angle basic setting (basic setting would be the more specific term than calibration) in 13 years of owning my B8.

There's no "coding to the car" that wasn't done if it was working fine. Invoking basic setting for the G85 can always be a coin toss.
What is the coding string for the J527 (16-steering) that you are showing?

You don't say what the actual DTC(s) is/are, nor which control module(s) it/they are from.

Does your car have active or dynamic steering? If so, from my experience and counter to what RossTech says, the active steering calibration needs to be done first and then the G85 steering angle sensor calibration needs to occur. Unfortunately, I have no clue how to do this on OBD11 but if you have VCDS, make sure it’s the latest software because it mattered for me and then follow the below. Maybe it will help.

Checked fuses and they are all working fine. Well the ones that are there. But need to check they are all there. But if 1 has missing why wouldn't I have a issue before trying the calibration?

B8 2009. Was in system 16 - steering column and used basic settings then g85 calibration 00778 was one of the codes. Would have to look up the rest

So my mechanic said he checked all my fuse it I went back and checked and it was missing a few small ones, i got two steering angle sensor here because i was told by two reputable tech mines was done, found a YouTube video and did that the guy said and it worked, idk if yours is really messed up or fuse relay or something else,

Thanks, i go into active steering 1B. Clear codes fine. I then enter security code but when I go into adapation or basic settings no channel posts up from the drop down list. I enter 4 anyway and it says function not available

Dynamic steering is the overarching term; the J792 at address 1B is the active steering control module.

The G85 (integrated into the J527 at address 16; though address 04 is still in the gateway summary list) still reads the steering wheel to steering column angle as always. But the J792 has to give the final word since it varies the steering column to steering rack angle with its variable ratio.

The system is discussed in Audi SSP 402 (can find via google search). Pages 26 and 27 would be of particular interest, though it's still a summary and not a workshop process. By that overview, you should be starting the basic setting from 1B, not 16. And it should be done during the alignment if any adjustments were made. If we do look at the workshop manual for the steering system:



To make a basic setting successfully, the steering angle sensor -G85- must first be calibrated using the steering wheel balance -VAS 6458- .
A Basic Setting is Necessary If:
♦ the active steering control module -J792- is replaced.
♦ the front axle toe is adjusted.
♦ the rear axle toe is adjusted.
♦ the vehicle suspension was changed, for example, changing from standard to sport suspension.
♦ the steering angle sensor was calibrated.
♦ the steering column was replaced.
♦ the steering wheel is at an angle when driving straight.
Note
Before performing a basic setting on the dynamic steering, check the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory and correct any faults. A basic setting to the dynamic steering must only be performed using alignment equipment approved by VW/Audi.




There are two choices for performing a basic setting on the dynamic steering:

The “Quick Access“
This procedure should be selected for the following activities if:
♦ the active steering control module -J792- was replaced,
♦ the steering angle sensor -G85- was calibrated,
♦ the steering column was replaced,
♦ the steering wheel is at an angle when driving straight.

The “Complete Alignment“
This procedure should be selected for the following activities if:
♦ the suspension was adjusted during an axle alignment,
♦ the front axle toe was adjusted,
♦ the rear axle toe was adjusted,
♦ the vehicle suspension was changed, for example, changing from standard to sport suspension.




♦ A basic setting to the steering angle sensor must be made using the -VAS 6458- before beginning the calibration.
♦ Before beginning the basic setting, check the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory and correct any malfunctions present.


So the wonder would be if you have dynamic steering, are you pretty much locked into having to do a J792 basic setting after you ever do a J527 steering angle zero/calibration.

Also, when looking at procedures, anything that refers to J500 (44-steering assist) is B8.5 electric power steering, not B8.0 hydraulic power steering. The info may or may not be directly applicable to your vehicle.

Posting some code numbers is not particularly helpful. We don't have lookup tables from Audi for these things. It would be better to find the history log and just copy paste the complete info for the 16 and 1B sections. I'm certainly not going to go looking up all those U codes when the text is already there in the log.

Dynamic steering is the overarching term; the J792 at address 1B is the active steering control module.

The G85 (integrated into the J527 at address 16; though address 04 is still in the gateway summary list) still reads the steering wheel to steering column angle as always. But the J792 has to give the final word since it varies the steering column to steering rack angle with its variable ratio.

The system is discussed in Audi SSP 402 (can find via google search). Pages 26 and 27 would be of particular interest, though it's still a summary and not a workshop process. By that overview, you should be starting the basic setting from 1B, not 16. And it should be done during the alignment if any adjustments were made. If we do look at the workshop manual for the steering system:







So the wonder would be if you have dynamic steering, are you pretty much locked into having to do a J792 basic setting after you ever do a J527 steering angle zero/calibration.

Also, when looking at procedures, anything that refers to J500 (44-steering assist) is B8.5 electric power steering, not B8.0 hydraulic power steering. The info may or may not be directly applicable to your vehicle.

Posting some code numbers is not particularly helpful. We don't have lookup tables from Audi for these things. It would be better to find the history log and just copy paste the complete info for the 16 and 1B sections. I'm certainly not going to go looking up all those U codes when the text is already there in the log.

The U codes coming from the sport diff are just "hey, there's an issue in this other module I rely on, go fix it". So the errors at 03 and 1B would be what's relevant, not the errors at 22. The long log post is all just garble; you probably copy/pasted directly from something that lacked carriage returns. Try pasting it into something like Notepad, and then copy/paste from that. Also, to make the thread less lengthy, you can put the log text in a code block. so [ code ] text then [ /code ], except without the spaces within the [ ].

I don't have dynamic steering myself, so I can't explore anything within 1B, such as the measuring values. Of course, the workshop manuals are useless for how to run the software operations. "run guided fault finding". And that's the issue with the third-party tools. They can access the on/off buttons and the values, but they lack the "what am I suppose to do" process, which is the scan tool's responsibility in the new diag tool paradigm.

Nice job sorting through it. There's so much lacking info regarding process and sequence if you don't have ODIS ("guided fault finding") for the various replace and basic setting operations. All we generally have to work with is whatever experience people have worked out and bring back to the forums.

They got rid of dynamic steering as an option starting with B10. But the rack is now progressive instead of linear as well. But there's plenty of "assistance" systems now to keep the car nice and complicated to maintain.
