View Full Version : Any 'while you're in there' parts if doing CAT replacement?

I recently ordered a set of GAS high flow cats. I will be taking it to an Indy shop for replacement, but I'm wondering if I should look at proactively replacing anything else?
I thought motor mounts would be an item, but the shop told me I wouldn't be saving any labor doing motor mounts now [confused]

Rear upper timing covers.
Jxb brace thingy (I forgot what it's called). The one that holds the drive shaft.
Maybe an xbrace of your choice.
Transmission flush.
I'd even ask if they could power wash the back side of the engine just to clean up anything.

If you're pulling off and resealing the upper timing covers, it would be such a good time to update the upper timing chain tensioners. Did this myself a few months ago and it completely solved the cold start rattle.
The hard part of this job is getting the cats out so if you've gone that far you're already halfway done

There's much more room to work on a Q5 than an S4. If that shop is going to do tensioners on an S4, they will have to pull the transmission.

Not necessarily. The upper timing tensioners can be done with the engine in the car. The lower tensioners need the tranny out but it's a helluva lot more logical to pull the engine instead.
The clutch can even be changed when the engine is out. Therefore, I hear of the engine being pulled more often than the tranny.
