Hey everybody, first ever post!! Anyways, I’ve got an 05 A4 B7 quattro. 6 speed manual with engine code bpg. Got a sound from my tranny that sounds like either a worn or chipped first gear. Going to do a replace / rebuild. My question is I need to know what transmissions will bolt in. The series is 01X and the code is GVE. Now am I able to buy a used GVE and take the internals from that and swap them over to mine? It would be an 01X too. I assume this would work as I believe the big diffrence between the codes and series is 6 vs 5 speed, fwd vs awd, and the gear ratios. Need to know if that would work or what internals I could use from other series or codes. (02X GYY, 01E, 01A, etc.) any and all insight is helpful as I can't find anything online. thanks again!!

01x is fwd. 02x is quattro. Unless it's absolutely awful sounding, it's pretty fine. 315k miles on my 02x with the 1st gear whine and multiple launches.

That’s what I was reading but it has the 01x stamp but clearly is all wheel drive, not sure if it was stamped wrong or what now, do they have other stamp locations?

I would be inclined to say they just use the same front case. 02x should be different gearing off the top of my head, at least for first, plus the different rear obviously. I believe I also recall a sticker calls out the finished part number, but mine and the 0a3 I have are both long gone.

Well I just got under and looked again and now I’m even more confused but also inclined to think these might be part numbers? Found 4 codes:
01X301103P found under the tranny near the drain plug, GVE06124 is located right next to this.
01X301315F found it on the drivers side of the tranny towards the center of it
02X301211C found up towards the top of the tranny but still on the side, this is closer to the rear differential.
01X409131B this is located above the drivers side drive shaft.
I want to assume the 02X might be the transmissions actual code and the rest are part numbers associated with the transmission. Confused because I very clearly see a rear driveshaft and the rear wheels get power, but I know the 01X is a FWD tranny. They are just casting codes and reused between both. A gve 02x would be your replacement. But unless it sounds like marbles, it's more work than necessary. I've had the 1st gear noise for 150k myself and still launch it.
Now, some on ebay will list it as 01x for not knowing, you'd just want to confirm it has the rear coupling if you do go that route.

Sweet, thanks for clearing it up for me. Definitely going to buy a new one as first gear and reverse( just not as bad) sounds incredibly loud. It’s embarrassing being in parking lots and at stop lights. Gotten so many looks I just needed up going home to take my lame cobalt. I’ve got the tools, time, and money to do it so might as well
