Greetings from Chicago, IL USA. As the title states, I just bought a 2016 Audi A6 with the CREC engine.
Car has 107,000 miles and decent service history. Water pump replaced at 56,000 miles, AC compressor done at 105,000 miles, and pads and rotors done at 106,000 miles.
Car drives fine but the idle is a little rough and the engine has some very light ticking, nothing like my 2008 E 350 though.
What concerns me is oil consumption: Last night i had the “Add up to one quart” warning while driving. Drove it like that for 11 miles city driving under 2000 RPMs, got home and added a quart.
I’m sure the PCV system needs servicing, what parts do I replace? And how can I improve oil consumption? Can I install a catch can?
Please let me know of any items that should be replacedor needs attention at this milage. I drive mostly in the city and occasionally like going to the woods and doing some spirited driving.

Unfortunately some of these engines consume a bit of oil. Before deciding to tackle the PCV I would monitor it to see how quickly it is going through a quart of oil. Replacing the PCV might fix the consumption or at least reduce it. You have to pull the supercharger so I would not be so ready to jump in to the repair unless the consumption is high. If you are burning a quart in less than 1,000 miles then you might consider it.
I don't read much about installing a catch can on the 3.0 so I am not sure if its worth it.

In terms of the catch can, They don't do anything for the 3.0T unless you do PCV relocation.
See Audi C7 Owners youtube channel for his PCV relocation series.

the 'ticking' is very likely the injectors. listen to videos of other 3.0tfs cars idling to see if it's the same rhythmic sound.
many people have accepted the reality of keeping extra oil in their garage and topping it off periodically.
i agree with previous suggestion to refill, and keep track of how many miles it takes before you get the warning again.
if you'd like to get some bg44k and BG epr , you can use those by following the label instructions.
Wouldn't be a bad idea to get new spark plugs properly gapped and coils if you're after improved MPG maybe engine filter since it's cheap.
You'll start to get codes detectable by vcds or 034 dongle that'll let you know if stuff is starting to fail like pcv or cats etc.
my advice is keep your factory catalytic converters, don't 'preventatively' delete them. only delete 2 of the 3 (baby resonators, center resonator, rear muffler) at maximum or you'll regret it especially with test pipes. There are so many threads of people that fall for that trap.
Get stage 1 tune from 034 with tcu tune. they recently updated their crec file.
change your cabin filter and enjoy it for the beautiful machine that it is.

I have 117000 on mine.
I keep a few quarts of oil on hand for when the low oil warming pops up.
So far, I'm only burning 1qt/2500 miles.
Haven't done PCV yet. No codes.
Just add oil and watch it. Believe it or not Audi says 1qt/800 miles is normal, and though I disagree with it, it's what they say....fwiw

Thanks guys, will send updates as the car ages and things need replacing. It may need a TCU tune/update or fluid flush as the trans doesn’t like the sudden drop in cold weather here. Rough idle might be motor mounts.

Really you'll know it's time for mounts when one day you're at a red light and start to feel the engine shaking around lmao good memories.
You could have someone rev the engine while in park so you can visually check if your engine is lifting and shaking around like it's dom torreto's charger.
If you don't have more urgent needs in life, I personally found a new oem trans mount + jxb drive carrier upgrade + 034 trans insert gave me hella crisp drivetrain sensation and the cold air intake makes the whine sound so intoxicating i love it. I got stage 1 tune after a few years of preventative maintenance checklist and bolt-ons but everyone chooses their own path.

I got rid of my '13 with 103k, I had it since 50k. I went through a quart about every 3-4k depending on my driving. I had a new PCV done right when I got the car though.

Update on my comment here, I just started getting the PCV Regulator Performance code again. I asked my shop about the relocation kit, and they said they've had issues with it and do not recommend it.
So maybe the use/success of this kit varies?

When you replace the PCV, make sure to also do the thermostat (have to take supercharger off for that so might as well while it's off) and there are a few valves/crossover pipes prone to breaking that are 'when in rome' replacements. With your water pump at 60k+ I would also replace that as well.
These engines are 99% bulletproof. Oil Separator (PCV) and waterpump are the weak points. Do the PCV ASAP either way.. it's the one thing that will snowball into much bigger things if left unadressed.

We've got two 3.0T in our household; one with the CREC and one with CREH. The older one with about 102K uses a bit of oil and we're watching it. So. we're in the same boat. I've recently changed oil, flushed with Liqui Moly motor flush and done the plugs. Two things of note. Injectors as noted above are somewhat loud on these cars. Second, when oil is fresh, I'd swear the motors idle smore smoothly and quieter.
Perhaps, changing (1) plugs, (2) air filter, (3) oil, and (4) if you're so inclined (and this may be overkill) coils. Then, carefully monitor before jumping to big time and money makes sense... Just a thoght.
We haven't yet done coils, but have otherwise followed this path. We are monitoring. Perhaps 0.5-1.0 Liter at 2K miles.. The "younger" 3.0 is stage 2, but only 70K miles. it uses about 0.5 liter every 5K (one oil change interval).

Gonna do the PCV first for sure, there is suction when you remove the oilcap.I’ve heard some suction is normal but why not just replace it for peace of mind!

The car keeps consuming oil. About 2 quarts already during a 559 mile period. Bought car with 107,397 miles and it’s at 107,956 miles.Might have todo a piston soak very soon if PCV does ‘t fix it…

Good luck with soak and PCV!
I hope that gets you back down to a liter per 5-6k miles.
I’ve read low friction piston rings are sometimes the culprit along with valve seals and your basic leaks here and there..

I just did the piston soak routine this year on my 2013 3.0t, that had 182k miles on it. It was previously consuming around 1qt of oil every 800 miles or so. After soaking the pistons it only consumed 1/2 a quart over 4,500 miles, so a huge improvement. No guarantee that it's your issue, but it's def worth the minimal effort

look up piston soak method on youtube. they remove spark plug and pour barryman b12 into it to soak with intent of clearing up the engine internally hoping it'll stop oil consumption. there are atleast 2 active threads on audizine about it

Thanks!
Mine is starting to consume a little coolant as well as 2 liters of liqui moly every 4000 miles.
Got a bit of a valve cover gasket leak as well on both sides.
I'm now at 117k and drive it like I stole it. That tends to burn more oil than highway cruising in this car.

Congrats, northwest Indiana here but work in the city, just grabbed my first audi 2017 s6 with 30k miles, are you planning on driving the A6 in our brutal winters?

I am over in Valpo, IN and used to commute to Bolingbrook, IL for work daily. Drove my A7 year round with all season tires and no issues. Roads are crappy for a day or 2 and then all good. The A7 with quattro actually did better than our 4x4 Jeep Patriot we used to have.

I'm in St.John lol I commute to downtown Chicago once a month but will be taking the South Shore most likely since it's easier for my schedule (can't stand traffic).
Let's get in some drives together before weather gets bad!
