Hey fam, I’ve got a 2012 A6 that appears to have an issue with hard starts only after fueling up. The mechanic is saying there’s a bad solenoid but wondering if I can temporarily avoid this issue (until I take her in) by fueling while the engine is running. I know this is a no no for some cars and wondering if the A6 is one of them. Thanks in advance for any info around this!!!!

To my knowledge this is a "no no" for all cars, some more risky than others. The State of Maryland Department of the Environment states "Always turn your vehicle engine off while refueling." Maybe you can ask someone at your volunteer fire department.

Hard start after fuel up is classic stuck evap/purge valve symptom

Fuelling with the engine running is not recommended but is done all the time. You can create a static charge on your body getting out of a car but all you have to do is touch the car when you get out to discharge that static charge. All too often people don’t do that though and are still carrying that charge when they grab the fuel nozzle.

Racing teams fuel engine running all the time.

They know what they're doing. A study of about 200 gas station fires supposedly found 50% caused by static charge as you noted. Many gas stations prohibit the practice for liability reasons. OP may have a rare reason to consider keeping the engine on despite the risk, but there doesn't seem to be any advantage as a routine practice. And who knows what's going on with the other vehicles around you; the Ghibli next to you may be immaculate, but the BMW in front of you with engine running may be shooting sparks out its exhaust!
