IDE00025 Coolant temperature 94.50 °C

IDE00102 Control Module temperature 56 °C

IDE00380 Coolant fan 1: activation 32 %

IDE00381 Coolant fan 2: activation 126 %

IDE00971 Coolant fan activation: specified value 58.4 %

IDE01236 Coolant recirculation pump not activated

IDE01266 Coolant shut-off valve closed

What I have noticed :

The "Auto Scan" readout above was done about 1 minute after an engine cold startup. Not sure the "Coolant temperature: 77 °C" is supposed to be this high (1 minute after startup).

The gas cap retainer chord has been broken for years. VCDS registers this as a fault, not a problem for me.

Orange Engine dash light came ON for the first time 5 days ago. The same fault code has since been reset 3 times, after each drive. The car seems to drive OK with the Engine light ON, however the radiator 2 fans are running at max.

Bought this car new in 2014. Not sure is this is related, but for the past 2 years or so, every cold start (we're in Miami where morning "cold" start temp is generally 76 - 82 degrees F) takes the tachometer about 45 seconds to settle from say 1.2K RPM, to engine idle, say 500 RPM. Once the idle settles, the transmission is engaged & car is driven.

With NO fault codes, while driving for 20 minutes with outside temp at approx 32 C degrees, with the AC OFF neither fan seems to be running. After coming to a stop (verified neither fan is ruuning), engaging AC at lowest temp setting, cabin fan ON full, cold air through cabin vents, both radiator fans engage at very high speed. Then, when turning AC off, both radiator fans stop.

While driving quite aggressively, I monitored the coolant temp. The highest reading was 98 C. The AC ON / OFF did not seem to change the coolant range by more than a couple degrees. After idling several minutes (radiator fans not spinning), the VCDS coolant temp of 94.5 C dropped to about 87 C.

Each time the fault code was triggered when the VCDS coolant temp measured 74, 77, 78 degrees C. One time the engine light came on within a minute of engine cold start, the other 2 times not sure as my wife was driving...

An engine start with the existing Engine fault dash lamp ON, both fans spin at max (with or without AC).

Thank you for taking a look. Any ideas would be greatlty appreciated.

Good writing sir. I’m told offering the full readout is beneficial but I understood very little of all that.
The rest of the description was incredible.

Well… I’m no Audi expert but I spent a ton of time with BMW.

Funny HVAC issues would occur when the Hedgehog would go bad.

The hedgehog was a strange aluminum cast part with the aluminum spikes coming out of it. They are cooling spikes from a part in front of the center console under the dash on a BMW.

On my 2009 Audi A4 I noticed a hedgehog mounted on the front radiator. Maybe it’s a similar thermal management device on an Audi C7.

There’s no way to know if a hedgehog is bad other than swapping out a known good one.

Based on code “malfunction in cooling system performance” sounds like you need a new thermostat water pump assembly. Pretty common issue. Maybe you could get away with replacing coolant temp sensor first

The temp sensor is "easy" to replace but if you are measuring normal temps, just lower than expected, the odds are, you have the basic bad thermostat. You can replace this externally, but it again is "easy" to do.

A 2014 should have had an upgraded water pump, but it's hard to say if you are not the 1st owner as they were expensive to replace and someone might have cheaped out.

Here is a shot of what you have to access. Yes... you have to remove the intake manifold... after that it is "easy"!!

The temp sensor is on the upper left. The thermostat is buried under that hose fitting pointed down, on a hose that heads to the radiator. Just remove the pump, right? The pump itself is easy to remove, but the belt that drives it is not. That plastic housing on the right side... that covers the belt. It has a LEFT HANDED THREADED bolt holding it in. I have removed the pump with belt in place and pulling the bolt. Both are a epic PITA!!! Here is a good thread on the whole process. (https://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/863863-Need-help-with-water-pump-replacement)

I suggest you replace the pump and the belt if you don't know the history. The metal bodied pumps are the best long term option. You generally get the pump, belt and orings in a kit. The hardest part can be getting the hoses to seal on a new pump since they formed over the years to the old pump. Expect them to leak and if they don't... consider yourself lucky! A set of new orings for them can help too! Also replace the union from the pump to the oil cooler. It's a known leaker after replacement if not. You can get the orings, but again, unless you know the history, new replacement is cheap insurance against getting stuck on the roadside!

Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Oh... and watch out for the model car the pump goes on.

I got a metal pump for an Audi A5 2.0tfsi. Item Description said VW something 2.0tfsi. Same motor right?!?!

It was identical EXCEPT the part of the pump that rests against block was slightly different and kept it from fully mounting. It's the end part that holds the actual impeller (metal portion on plastic pumps). The housing that mounts to the blocks are identical. A few seconds with a grinder and I was good to go.

I wasn't willing to pay the Audi Tax and I had to do a little extra work. No functions were effected. Minor cosmetic changes.

Just a heads up if you see a killer deal on the VW version and wonder why. They actually ARE different, even though it's the same motor.

Cheers,

You do NOT have to remove the intake manifold. Remove throttle body from intake and there’s plenty of room. Just did one a couple days ago. 45min- hour job if you’re familiar. First time maybe 2 hours. Pretty straight forward.

You do NOT have to remove the intake manifold.

In general I would agree... but it truly depends on your skills, knowledge and physical size. I've given up trying to contort myself into spaces no body should fit into to save undoing a few extra bolts. "Straight forward" or "simple" really depends on many things not related to the actual job.

In this case, I would still undo the intake and inspect my intake ports, swirl flaps and injectors. Do a basic cleaning while it's apart and see if it needs a media blast in the near future.

I may not follow all the rules either (like pulling the pump without removing the belt), but I try to remind myself why someone made them originally!

To each their own.

Cheers,
