View Full Version : New MMI Screen - Not Folding All The Way In

EDIT: I just noticed this tip from the TSB "Be sure you are viewing the software level of the E380 controller and not the software level of the 5F module." I'll report back with my findings then.

Last week I had the string that moves my MMI display in and out snap on my MY2012 A6. I got a junkyard screen from a MY2013 A6 and installed it with no problems. The screen folds out nicely but when the screen folds back in, it doesn't go all the way in and sticks out a tiny bit. Sometimes if I turn the car off and let the MMI display stick out without pushing it in, and then start the car it will actually pull the screen in the rest of the way. There is this TSB (https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2014/MC-10122424-9999.pdf) that talks about a software update for MY2012 A6 and A7 if the track guide is replaced. I checked my software version for the 5F module and it is 0423, higher than the 0204.

Is there any type of relearn process for the MMI display? I tried quickly checking adaptations and basic settings through OBDeleven but it is not a list, but instead goes by channel numbers. If so, what is the relearn process and channel number?

In case it's helpful for anybody else replacement MMI screen strings available on Aliexpress. I learned the hard way not to leave a phone on a vent mount in situations where the screen might close on it. If you can't figure out how to get the new screen working right, might be worth trying to restring your old assembly.

does anyone have a tutorial or video on how to re-string?

Well I did check and the software for the E380 is 0423, so the MMI is up-to-date as per the TSB. I am however now seeing a code for "03787 - Rotary mechanism for front display unit (mechanical malfunction)". I contacted LifetimeAudiParts, which is where I bought the screen w/ track motor, and they're going to send me another one. Will update once I get the other screen installed, and a shoutout to them as so-far they've been really helpful!

Turns out OBDeleven has yet another bug (big surprise). When viewing the subsystems and checking the E380 controller, it will still display the version info for the main module (in this case the 5F Multimedia module), not the actual controller you selected to query. I updated my MMI with files from thenavman and the screen goes all the way in, and the code for the rotary mechanism went away. I really need to just switch over to VCDS/ODIS for big stuff and keep OBDeleven as an on-the-go code scanner and clearer.

Yes, OBD11 is for on the road diagnostic really while VCDS is for programming and breaking out more advanced diagnostic tools in my opinion.
