View Full Version : Buying a Used Audi...What should I fix?

I am going to try an buy a 1999 Audi a4 1.8t Quattro with about 100k miles on it. Other than a timming belt and the parts that are changed with it. What else should I replace so it wont break down on me in the middle of the road.

I know that timming belts and water pumps...etc that should be changed when the belt is installed.

Anything else I should change to be preventative?

ths timing belt should have already been done at around 60-80k. if its not already been done, i would pass on the car. becuase that indicates how well the PO kept up with servicing the car.

Yeah I understand that at 100k if the timming belt isnt changed then its useless.

What else though?

I bought my A4 1.8tq at 92k miles. The previous owner had many receipts but somehow lost the one for the t-belt [rolleyes]. I'm doing the maintenance before anything else and I'm doing/have done:

t-belt, water pump, tensioner, roller
snub nose mount
accessory belts
coolant flush
new battery before winter
front brakes (pads getting thin, rotors somewhat warped)
valve cover gasket (leaky)
auto trans filter replacement and drain/fill fluid
checking gearboxes
air filter
cabin air filter
new DV (710N, my stocker is done for)
spark plugs
seafoam
cleaning MAF and TB

Overall spending a lot of $ that could be for mods, though it's nice to KNOW the car is reliable. I'd do the fuel filter but am gonna look into it more, everyone has a different opinion whether it should be changed or not.

Clutch man....hopefully that clutch has been replaced if it needs to be...they're like &1100 for a clutch and flywheel kit + labor = $1500-1700 in my experience...

Check the tie rod ends. They're prone to wearing out.
