View Full Version : Single hole in front grill?
I recently had my front grill replaced with an OEM part due to an accident, and I realized it came back from the body shop with a single drill hole on the lower right side of the grill. It looks like somebody had accidentally began to drill for the front license plate... BUT when I went online and compared with other grills, I saw that some of them had the hole as well, specifically other black optic grills like mine. This hole is not in the correct place for the license plate holes, but very close to the hole for the bottom right screw. Are these pilot holes or what? This is too coincidental that I found others with the same single hole.
Either way, how can I cover it up?
I am attaching the picture from my car, but here are the examples I found:

Sharing this in case others happen to stumble upon the same question. There are two black optic grill part numbers, one for cars sold in states with front plates, and one for non-front-plate states.
8K0853651PCKA is the part number for the grill without the hole - no front plate
8K0853651PVMZ is the part number for the grill for cars sold in states with front plates
I have 8K0853651PVMZ since my car was originally sold in New Jersey.

Clarifying that we're discussing specifically only B8.5 and only S4, the base p/n for the radiator grill is 8K0 853 651. The rev letter denotes application, and the three letter color code is simply color scheme.
For without front parking sensors (7X0, 7X1, 7X7, 7X9)
rev J - for 6W6 (EU plate)
rev P - for 6W3 (NAR plate), 6W4 (South Korea), and 6W7 (China)
rev AF - for 6W9 (no plate)
The color code options for the above are:
1RR platinum gray for 4ZB and 4ZE (https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-volkswagen-audi-parts/s4-grille-assembly-platinum-grey-with-chrome-trim/8k0853651p1rr/)
VMZ black chrome for 4ZM (https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-volkswagen-audi-parts/s4-grille-assembly-black-with-chrome-trim/8k0853651pvmz/)
CKA black matt for 4ZD (https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-volkswagen-audi-parts/s4-grille-assembly-black-with-black-trim/8k0853651pcka/)
For with front parking sensors (7X4, 7X8), the rev letters just increase one to K, Q, and AG. The rest is the same.
So you got rev P since your vehicle is 6W3. Had it been built 6W9, you would have gotten AF.
What I don't get is what's actually different about the rev P and rev AF for B8.5. B8.0, it made more sense, where the 6W3 had that cover plate for the holder. The rev J has the molded space for the EU plate. But P and AF seem to be just the same. I don't think the holes for the plate mount are predrilled on the P. Maybe that hole you're asking about is the positioning hole to set the license plate mount?

Thanks for the awesome reply! This is the type of reply that makes this forum excellent... thank you again sir! And to answer your question, I do have a front license plate mount that came with the car.. I'll see if there is a pin or poker on it that would utilize the hole on the grill.
