Like the title says I am rebuilding my engine due to what i suspect is spun bearing that got pulverized within the engine. [=(] For clarification, the engine related mods i had were 034 hpfp piston upgrade and IE's Dual pulley tune running the E40 file at the time of the incident. Other mods are upgraded intercooler and full catback and intake. I have ran this file before with no issue and have always measured my ethanol content to the exact amount.

The day it happened, i was doing a few runs at the track. After the 3rd time, i stopped to watch my friends and when it was time to go my car would not turn over. It took a few tries but it eventually did and thats when i heard the dreaded knocking sound. I drove it down to the gas station and then had it towed. I opened the oil filter and there was metal shavings all inside which why i suspect a bearing.

Fast forward today, I have the engine ready to pull out to inspect inside and my question is does anyone have any experience with this? I watched a couple of videos on rebuilds so i fairly confident but I am just wondering if theres something i should look out for or if its better just to buy a used engine or send the engine to the shop to do it for me. Im really hoping i can just replace the bearings and maybe polish the crank if the damage is not too severe. Im just exploring all my options as i dont feel like forking over 4-5k for another engine if i could just replace the parts for around 1-2k.

Ultimately i suspect the cause of this was running the e40 file and perhaps the 034 hpfp piston failed because when i went to drain the oil it smelled distinctly like gas which leads me to believe somewhere along the way fuel leaked inside causing it to fail.
I appreciate any advice on this matter and while the engine is out if i should go ahead and replace anything as the car currently has about 85k miles.

Could also be some cylinder head scoring if there was enough dilution to spin/damage a bearing.

Well, a stuck (open) Injector would certainly cause the oil to smell like gas, and cause a myriad of other problems as well, including washing the cylinder wall(s) resulting in scoring to the bore, and potential piston (and obviously ring) damage. There's also a slim possibility of a bent rod if sufficient fuel accumulated in the cylinder to 'hydro-lock' the motor. An endoscope/borescope would allow for inspection through the spark plug holes to rule out any cylinder damage, though you're probably gonna want to disassemble the motor anyway.
