View Full Version : Which Muffler to go with for a Custom Exhaust?

I've been searching the forums for about 15 minutes and i've desided to go with a 2.5" Custom Exhaust and just run a rear muffler. My problem is that all the Magnaflow mufflers, such as the 14815 (http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shopexd.asp?zone=main&id=761) and the 14816 (http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shopexd.asp?zone=main&id=762) , only have 2.25" inlets. Does anyone know of a good sounding muffler that has a 2.5" Inlet or is really even that important?

my friends got magnaflow on his M3 and it seems to be doing fine. i am sure your a4 will be okay.

Alright... here's another question. Should i go with the 3" Diam. Tips or the 3.5" diam. tips? Totally visual, but do you guys think the 3.5" will fit?

You can just buy one without the tips, it does come in a 2.5" single inlet with two 2.5" outlets and then just buy the tips you want and have the shop weld them on.

This is what you might want (http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shopexd.asp?zone=main&id=629) if you want polished or this if you dont mind satin. (http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shopexd.asp?zone=main&id=463)

Cool... I think i'll actually go with this one. It's on eBay for $81.66 with free shipping. I've wanted to get a Borla but wanted bigger than 2.25" and this seemed like the cheap/smart way to do it. Mike, do you, or does anyone, think this will be a decent setup?

Basically i just want to know if this is a good idea or should i just get an APR or Borla.

Have you looked into Vibrant street sleeper exhausts? I thin that's what they're called. when I redo my exhaust, I'm going w/ a vibrant muffler, and a 3" from the turbo back.

If i had a BT then i might go 3". but since i will keep my car on the more modest side i didn't want to over do it like some might. I figure i might go GTRS later on down the road, but fur now just getting ready for a K04 or something.

I got a brullen downpipe 2.5" stainless steel if your interested, $60 plus shipping. There is no flange on the lower part, but it does have a flange that hooks up to the cat. PM me

Don't buy the magnaflow. IT'S WAY TOO LOUD! It sounds like hell. Buy a used S4 oem muffler for about $50 shipped and get it welded on. I have it and it sounds great. Bitterchild can make a custom exhaust for you with the S4 muffler on it.

The only problem with those is the tips are spaced too far apart, even if you put chrome tips on it they'll still look funny. I'm running the same style as that, but mine's 3" in and 2.5" outlets, I don't mind the tips anymore since I never see them [:p].

I have that exhaust on my car. The OEM S4 sounds very sedate at cruising and idle but give it some gas and it sounds pretty mean. It's actually a very unique sound.

I have This as Mid muffler (http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shopexd.asp?zone=main&id=843) and this at the end with tip (http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shopexd.asp?zone=main&id=795)

this setup 3" tho. It is great. Little louder than my old Borla (2.25").

this is what my Remus muffler sounds like on my 2.8 with no resonator. http://media.putfile.com/Remus you'd have to look up whether they have your inlet size.

When I do my Exhaust, I want it loud.

I don't know what it is... Maybe different taste? I honestly should say that I have never heard a modded/ loud Audi before, but have been around a ton of WRX buddies who's cars are crazy loud. open downpipes and what not, so I know loud. But Im not sure what to expect.

I want something that will be loud, Now if your going to tell me that 3" (just for example) with two mufflers is going to be too loud, then I need to hear this.

Maybe sound clips... might be too much to ask but it could help a lot of people.

Awsome. [race]

I too want it to me loud. And if it's too Loud then i'll just buy a different muffler and replace the Magnaflow, or just add a resonator.

Do you have a sound clip of either?

loud? why would you want that? so at 20 mph and 3k your car is screaming while a minivan passes you.

i had a pretty loud exhuast on my old car and its kinda embarresing when you have to make your exhuast scream, when a heavy foot minivan speeds off and you wanna get in front of it.

quiet is more Euro, unless you got alot of ponyies under the hood

ActiveMonkey

I don't drive with that "heavy" of a foot, but when i step on it i want it to be reasonably loud. If it is too loud i can just ad a resonator/mid muffler.

^^ im the same way, what is the best setup to run with a K03 for now... I want it to sound more like a STi or WRX with an exhaust system... more of a rumble like a mustang.... any ideas?

WRX's / STI's sound the way they do because of the horizontaly opposed engine layout and unequal length headers... Hard to reproduce with out an engine swap [:D]

I need to hear some exhausts in person.
"Loud" ... eh aggressive [rolleyes] maybe thats what i meant.

there is a difference between loud but controlled but with nice tone/ sound, and then just pure over kill loud-ness. it still needs to be livable aka highway driving and around town. I dont want It to "scream" I want enough to be noticed as tuned.

Listen to some of these (http://www.magnaflow.com/04sound/04sport.asp) These aren't doin' it for me. The tone is just sorta there but IMO sounds like its being too restricted.

Lol, I don't know about your question, but I gotta say, that was some great late night entertainment listening to the magnaflow mufflers for the Audis, then the BMW M3, and then the Saturn Ion and Scion xB... QUITE a difference. Lol.

Maybe you should find a sound clip of the way you want your car to sound, then somebody on here can recomend a muffler for you?

Kyle

Edit:

Maybe if you went TP>3"(if you're going BT, 2.5ish if staying with K03/K04)>single muffler it'd be loud enough? I think I know what you want it to sound like, some of the subies at the track sound MEAN.

There was one of a Custom Magnaflow, 2.5" i think, and it was for sale. I've searched for it and i think it was from 3 or so months ago. Just a nice deep sound. I can't remember if he had a resonator though i think he didn't.

So theres no way to get the rumble sound of a WRX then without doing an engine swap... I dont believe that...

ActiveMonkey
10-10-2006, 08:23 AM
I dunno if i really like the WRX sound. To me it sounds like 50% juicy fart 25% rice 25% Fart Can. I'm gonna go to a few Exhaust shops today so i'll let everyone know what happens

Did you have a resonator? Did you like it? How much did the shop charge you? Was it holy crap loud or just a good loud?

HighDesertAudi
10-10-2006, 08:54 AM
I had a straight through resonator and the Muffler both magnaflow. Shop charged $450 with everything. Mine was quiete unless you get on it, sounded pretty good for a 4cyl engine nothing like a honda or any rice. Got alot of complaments on it, yours will be considerably louder because of your test pipe and down pipe though.

there is a lot of factors for the WRX/STi sound. engine layout, headers, displacement, exhausts, and sometimes cams.. the 1.8 will never have the exact sound of them. they can be as loud. just not have the signature subby sound

Right.

Every engine is made differently and there fore will sound different. you can get the same types of sounds but not the same.
Cat less full exhaust on an audi has its own great sound, as does the WRX platform EJ engines, but they still have different tones.

Here is some Lame tiny video we have.... Still beastly tho. To hear a loud WRX... (http://www.wrxfanatics.com/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=614049)
just thought I should show that off a little.

^^ if that link doesnt work, try this one. then click the second link (http://www.wrxfanatics.com/index.php?showtopic=42532&hl=rallytheshytoutofwrx)

Here's an old pic of my Magnaflow 14862 muffler. Believe you can buy these mufflers for $100-150 online and install is about $50 to install at any muffler shop. Sound wise I love it, yet can be very annoying during long drive times. If I had to do it over again I would keep my mid muffler/resonator.

Yeah my cars dirty.. and this picture doesn't do the muffler any justice. Bad lighting, but you get the idea.

Broadway Muffler in Walnut Creek just told me that i didn't know what i was doing and i should just get a borla and be done with it. Mel & Sons in concord on the other hand was really nice and said without looking at the car $425-$550 for a full 2.5" mendral bent with muffler.

$425-$550

Good or bad?

does that include the DP? if so I say Def a good deal. I got mine done yesterday. 2.5" DP with a 3 inch after that. Magnaflow resonator and a muffler. Sounds louder than my non-resonated milltek but only slightly. Hopefully it will quiet down eventually. Otherwise I will have to do something else about it. Keep in minds that I have a high-flow cat and a gt28rs. MY shop charged me 320 for the labor. It woud cost 350 if he included the muffler but I thought I could make it sound better this way. All together my bill was $480. No shiny tips though.

Went to Mel & Sons. for a 2.5" Downpipe with a 3" flexpipe then 2.5 the rest of the way ending in a Magnaflow 12268 Satin Muffler (http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shopexd.asp?zone=main&id=470) with no tips. he's just gonna weld some extra piping on the end to make tips.

I hate how the suby's have little tone change as engine speed changes. They are always so deep.
