View Full Version : Is a front end respray worth it?

I purchased my S5 sight unseen from a dealership across the country last year. I had been looking for this spec for a long time at that point, so I went ahead with the purchase without getting super detailed photos.

The paint is in mostly good condition with the exception of some very noticeable chunks of paint taken out on both front fenders, and a smaller but still noticeable one on the drivers side door. They appear to have been filled with something like Dr. Colorchip.

Would the cost of getting a respray even be worth it? I’m worried about a shop being able to paint match Sepang. I would end up doing the hood, bumper, fenders and maybe the drivers side door. It feels pointless to do any sort of paint maintenance (correction, ceramic coat, etc) with these imperfections. Will try to grab some pictures to add here today.

Def need some pics now that you mentioned something about special specs!

Paintwork is really pricy here here in SoCal, would be about $4k-$5k here for what you described.

Small paint chips filled with Dr. Colorchip can look really good if done properly. I've done a few on the front bumper cover of my car and they are virtually invisible. You have to have your head 24" inches or less from the bumper cover to even see the repaired area and even then it's not easy to see. But also keep in mind that this is on a white car. I'm not sure if other colors have the same type of result.

I can only speak from my experience, but I had almost the same circumstance. Bought a certified S5 from an Audi dealer in a different state. Couldn’t see all the damage from rocks, most were touched up, but the bumper had a decent amount of roughness. After about a year, I couldn’t take it anymore and had the hood and bumper repainted, which they blended into the fenders. It was through an independent shop, not an Audi dealer, so it was substantially cheaper.

My color was black, so was easier than your color. After it cured, put a clear bra over the hood and fenders and I am very happy with it. My car was 8 years old, so I was looking for improvement, not perfection. It turned out pretty good, and no one else would notice the one or two imperfections. DO IT!
