Hey all,

I just did an oil change on my 2012 A6 3.0T and heard the HORRIBLE timing chain slap after doing my oil change. Went to reset the service interval and saw I had a P0018 stored as a passive code. I know the chain slap after an oil change is normal, though horrible sounding, but am wondering if the accompanying P0018 is also normal? Code hasn't come back after I cleared it and I drove the car around the block after the change.

Pull both of the cam solenoids and clean them as they tend to get some sludge around them. Pull both VVTs and clean them up as well. My engine used to have the slap but I eventually had to do timing chains and now it’s slap free for the last 25,000 miles. Never heard of getting chain slap after an oil change but anything is possible with the old cam tensioner designs.

What oil are you running? Mine had a steady diet of Castrol from the dealer with the first owner. I switched to Mobil 1 and eventually to the LiquiMoly. My engine runs and sounds much better on the LM. That after oil change slap might be from your oil of choice.

I threw Liqui-Moly Pro-Line Engine Flush in my old oil and ran it for 15 mins, drained and filled with Quaker 5W-40, replaced oil filter with a cheap STP from AutoZone, and ran that for 15 mins to get rid of the leftover engine flush, then drained that and filled with Liqui-Moly 5W-40. Haven't installed the final Mann oil filter yet because previous owner's mechanic broke the stem that the filter snaps into on the oil filter cap so I have that ordered and coming in a week.

I was expecting the chain slap after watching C7 Owner's video on doing an oil change. I'm thinking next time I'll pull the fuse for fuel injectors and have the engine crank over, reinstall the fuse then start the engine. Heres the video showing him having the same chain slap that I did after an oil change, but he doesn't mention anything about P0018 Cam/Crank Correlation code: https://youtu.be/7vlq_iOCUOU?t=1413
