Hello, got my A5 3.0tdi 2008 CAPA stolen last year, now it was found and I got it back. Luckly there is no damages and it only run about 2k km.
MMI isn't working, with VCDS I see open circuit in CAN gateway. Optical bus diagnostic mention navigation radio and phone error. I guess when they stole the car they did something to avoid sat track. I removed MMI central console and cables are hooked, I checked C pillar and it's hooked, also fin shark seems connected.
How can I find where the circuit is interrupted? Thanks

If you have VCDS, then do a full autoscan, save the log to a file, post the file contents here so everyone can work from the same base factual information.

You did a ring break diagnosis. Were all the modules OK for electrical? Just the three you noted were Not OK for optical? Anything that failed electrical needs to be directly diagnosed: is the unit present, does the unit have power/ground.

As for the MOST ring, for MMI 2G:
J533 CAN gateway [ring diag master] // 19-can gateway; in dash between center stack and glove box >>
J523 MMI 2G [ring timing master] // 07-control head; in dash behind climate controls >>
R41 cd changer // 0E-media player 1; in dash above climate controls >>
R199 AMI // 1E-media player 2; in glove box >>
R36 bluetooth // 77-telephone; under front right seat >>
J525 amp // 47-sound system; in back left stack on top >>
R analog radio // 56-radio; in back left stack in middle >>
R78 tv tuner // appears you do not have this unit >>
J401 navigation // 37-navigation; the disc drive in the back left stack >>
R147 digital radio (Euro) / R146 sat radio (NAR) // 0F-digital radio; appears you do not have this unit >>
J533...

nav, radio, and phone. Curious. It would make sense if amp was also in that list.

So if you unplug the optical cable from the amp, you see a red light on one of the optical cable ports? That should be light from the upstream device, the R36. If then check the cable plugged into the radio unit, you should see no light. Now plug the cable back into the amp, and now you should see light on the plug for the radio (the amp is the upstream device from the radio, so the radio only sees the light if the cable is plugged in and the amp is powered/working).

To check the most basic of the front end, you could find the MOST ring junction in the back behind the cd changer and MMI controller and put a bypass plug on it and see if the MMI comes up (missing radio, telephone, and audio functions, but CAR should work, etc). If that works well, then you can move to using bypass plug on the optical cable port for the devices in the back left one by one to see which when bypassed things work. The R36 unfortunately, it not so easy to access.

J519 is saying drive select switch is not connected; is the drive select switch still there below the cd changer? You might need to check the cable is connected.

Thanks a lot today I'd get a fiber loop and once I'm back at home I can do more test. Btw when I removed the cd charger I could see red light on fiber, would it be correct to say that J523 --> J533 --> R41 there is no optical interruption? Later on I'll post optical fiber diagnosis with the loop and another scan.
Thanks again for your help

If you see red light on the fiber cable at a particular port, that means the immediate upstream device (J523 MMI 2G control module in this instance) is powered and able to produce light output.

And that assumption of order is based on all the cables being plugged back in where they belong. The ring will work so long as all the cables are plugged in and the devices are working regardless. But our map of presumed device order is only correct if the cables are all plugged in where they should be.

The dash devices are all in a line, then it passes through that junction I mentioned to the rest of the car, coming back to the junction from the J401 in your case and back to the dash devices.

what's the route of fiber after the BT under the passenger seat? I saw fiber connection under C pillar, on read of driver side. Btw, since the case is that thieves just disconnected or cut the fiber, where that would be more easy and quick to do? I see that fuse box compartment in driver side has been opened and forced. but I can't see fiber going there. I see some disconnected cables I'd post a picture. One seems SAT radio cable which I don't have, other 2 are white and another black one looks like alarm of the car.
Thanks again

Are those optical or RF? Those look like FAKRA connector RF cables, such as https://www.ebay.com/itm/382685736728

The optical cables will tend to be orange and in flex loom, such as https://www.ebay.com/itm/165027592363

I don't know why you'd have ends of RF cables there next to fuse panel C (driver's end of dash, I assume this is a left hand drive vehicle given the pic?). Could be they are always installed but only connected if relevant devices are equipped.

The only control module there is the J519, and the J285 instrument cluster, but neither of those have FAKRA jacks. If the ends are supposed to be joined with a union, I don't know who would go to who offhand. But those FAKRA wires would not be related to the MOST ring.

You can see an example of the union (plug T2bg) of the dash side optical loop (upper) and rest-of-car side optical loop (lower) in this image: https://postlmg.cc/bGbpyvfT
In red here: https://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/954694-MMI-is-Dead!?p=14755776&viewfull=1#post14755776
(this guy was doing other work, so a lot more apart than probably what your guys were doing)

The FAKRA lines going to the front would go to the J523 MMI 2G control module. But the only one would be the for the backup camera. If you pull the FAKRA off the J523 and the backup camera module in the right rear, does it ring out as complete? Should be the green plugs.

Keep in mind you can't remove the J523 from the optical loop. It is the ring master, no J523, no anything. In your pic, right behind, you see the T2bg plug that connects the dash half of the ring (the upper plug) and the rest of the car half of the ring (the lower plug). So all the optical errors are logical.

But I don't understand why electrical error for the other devices. Is the ignition off?

The J533 CAN gateway is hardwired to all the MOST devices. Since the MOST ring, if it's down, takes out diagnostic communication to all MOST devices because none of them have CAN bus connections (including the ring master J523), there's a ring break diagnosis process, using that hard line from the J533 to each MOST device.

When the J533 sends out the ring break diagnosis pulse, all the devices respond with two things: am I ok such as have power (electrical), and do I see the light from the preceding device (optical).

The ring break line passes from the dash half to the rest of the car half via pin 1 of plug T17d (17-pin brown plug at the base of the driver's side a-pillar); the wire is green/violet.

Ignition is on, engine off. so as long as those cut cables have nothing to do with the problems let's forget about it for now.
As I told, my car was stolen...right now my 2 original keys are not working. I am using the key used by the thieves which was in the car when i got it back. So I am trying to figure out what they could have cut, I guess they did that to avoid sat tracking. Surely it must be something where they didn't need to tear apart the car and I've the feeling it's something under the steering wheel.

I connected the loops there https://postlmg.cc/bGbpyvfT one of the disconnected side the other on the upper side

I tried in the boot disconnected fiber (1) from 2, connected the loop and still nothing, so far 1 doesn't have light at all.
So from the front where I see fiber light which is the route of the fiber in order to get to the boot?
Does it go via driver side (lhd) or passenger side?
thanks

ah sorry I see fiber light here, thought I did post that already.

Also from there, no fiber light. what if I connect the fiber with light from panasonic to that connector?
would it be silly or vaguely useful for testing? I'm collecting only failures, no matter what I do :-(

It's a loop, just needs to be followed. Take the ring break list:

19-CAN Gateway >
07-Control Head >
0E-Media Player 1 >
1E-Media Player 2 >
plug T2bg >
77-Telephone >
47-Sound System >
56-Radio >
37-Navigation >
plug T2bg >

So each device plug has two cables, one coming from the previous unit, one going to the next unit. So if you pull the plug and look, if you do not see red light on one cable, it's not coming from the previous device as it should. So you need to move to that device and see if it is putting out red light on one of its ports.

We see the left rear stack in your pic. That's 47-sound system (J525) on top, 56-radio (R) in the middle, and 37-navigation (J401) on the bottom.

We see the plug T2bg in your last pic. The upper half should have red light on one cable, that's the light coming from the R199 AMI in the glove box. The lower half should have red light on the other cable path, that's the light coming from the J401 drive.

The second pic of the plug and the CD changer (0E media player 1), that's just confirming light from the J523 (07 control head). Ok, so put that back.

If you separate the T2bg, do you see one light on each half? If not, what's before the T2bg upper plug half? The AMI device in the glove box, so go there.

If you do have red light on the upper T2bg half, but no red light at the amp, then what's before the amp? Not the T2bg, it's the 77-telephone (R36), under the front passenger seat.

The R36 and J401 both get power from the same fuse, fuse 3 in column "C" [brown] in the right rear "fuse panel F". 7.5A; have you checked that fuse?

As for keys, you'd have to assess if they redid the immobilizer adaptation and removed the old keys. Which is probably what they did. So to add the old keys back, you'd need to do an immobilizer adaptation. Not sure what Audi servers will do if the vehicle is previously reported stolen. I think up to 8 keys can be adapted to the J393, but only 4 can be enabled at a time? Probably need a dealership or shop with immobilizer adaptation privilege to connect and assess the current state of the immobilizer programming. Could be the old keys are still adapted to the J393, just not enabled.

Thanks tomorrow I will do more tests, the t2bg doesn't have light on the lower half, didn't check the upper half as it's fixed on the panel. So I'll checl first upper half.
I checled fuses last week, but I'll check again. I understood that if it's a problem with fuses the screen of MMI wouldn't start at all, in my case it shows splash screen only for few seconds then goes off.

I mentioned the keys just to give all possible information, my 2 original keys from audi don't work and I'm using the one they coded to steal the car but that's not an issue right now :-)
As I said the car has been stolen and prolly they wanted SAT nav off
So being in thief pants what would be the quickest way to interrupt NAV ? I suspect that's the reason for my problem.
Also the car was parked for 8 months in police deposit before I got it back, of course I had to put a new battery.

ok I could not resist, and did a quick test. Apparently the control head is not reachable with vcds scan, whicle is ok with optical diag bus.
Optical Bus Diagnostic : Standard

Controller Electrical Optical
19-CAN Gateway OK ERROR
07-Control Head(High/D3) OK OK
0E-Media Player 1 ERROR ERROR
1E-Media Player 2 ERROR ERROR
77-Telephone ERROR ERROR
47-Sound System OK ERROR
56-Radio ERROR ERROR
37-Navigation ERROR ERROR

I could see red light on fiber disconnected and I think also if I'm not wrong, red light coming out from control head back. So far of course AMI fiber doesn't have light.
I wonder why control head is unreachable via vcds but reports ok ok from fiber diag, what do you suggest as next steps?
Thanks again for the help

The car is B8.0; there's no infotainment cellular emissions of any manner on the vehicle. There's nothing to disable, nothing that is trackable. Even on B8.5 if it had MMI 3G+, UTSM is going down; even the cellular on it is not workable these days.

But in some markets, Audi had the option for a full mobile phone installation in the vehicle. Do you have that? The scan cannot report the p/n info for 77-telephone since the MOST is down, so I can't see if it's just a normal Bluetooth R36 or a full cellular R36+R86+R126. If they saw evidence of the built-in mobile phone, I could see them trying to sever the RF connection to the cellular aerial. They should have just pulled the fuse 3.

But "sat nav", there's no interaction off car for that, not in MMI days.

The ring break diagnosis is done via hard wires, not the optical bus. All the MOST members are on the ring break electrical bus. When the J533 CAN Gateway sends out a pulse, everyone responds at predefined interval two things "am I ok electrically, do I see the light from the predecessor". And that is pinged back on the ring break bus, not the MOST ring, which is down.

All the optical plugs have to be in place on the devices for the ring break diagnosis to mean anything. That test right there says the CD changer sees no light from the J523. If you pull the optical plug off the CD changer, there was light on the cable port, no? The plugs to the J523 and cd changer and J533; they're all right there together, got to make sure the right one gets on the right device.

Does the CD changer appear to be powered? If you press buttons on it, do you see light, hear action; can you load a disc? It report says electrical error from the CD changer, which doesn't make a lot of sense unless it's unpowered.

Assuming you have the glove box out so you can get to the J533 easily and access it's red 20-pin plug, the ring break line on it is pin 10, green/violet. On the CD changer is an 8-pin plug. The ring break line on it is pin 5. Do you test continuity from the J533 pin 10 to the R41 pin 5? Pulling plugs like this, you'll want the car off first. These should test continuous to J523 16-pin pin 14, and R199 AMI 8-pin pin 5 also.

If you throw a bypass loop on that upper half of the T2bg plug, that will isolate the ring to just the dash components. MMI should come up at that point and those four devices should all look good.

The car itself has the mobile socket under the central armrest. Never even tried to use it actually.
Do you mean fuse 3 for MMi in the passenger side fuse box? II'll replace it just in case.

I guess the cd charger doesn't have power at all, unlike the control head I never saw light coming out from fiber connection and nothing on the buttons. So that'd be a good reason for not seeing light on AMI. Could that be a just fuse in position 3 in the booth or it's just control head dead?

On the PR codes list, yeah, that's from the vehicle identification sticker, which only has about 1/3 of all the PR codes for a VIN. You can get the complete list from Audi, direct or via a dealership.

Someone that actually has 1BU suspension, curious. I've never seen an actual instance of it being configured; we don't have it on this side of the planet.

It doesn't list 7D3 (cd changer) like my MY09 MMI 2G High vehicle. But that might simply be a code that got pushed off the short list by your other configuration options.

Unfortunately, like mine, neither the sound system code nor the telephony code made the short list. 9VD would be standard sound system and 9VK would be B&O sound system. Both come with an outboard J525 amp. Mine with simply the Bluetooth handsfree version of the R36 is 9ZG.

Everything gets power from exactly where it gets power.

passenger end of dash, column brown (term 30)
fuse 1 > R41 cd changer & R199 external audio input (AMI)
fuse 5 > J533 can gateway

passenger end of dash, column black (term 15)
fuse 5 > J533 can gateway

right rear, column "C" (term 30)
fuse 3 > R36 telephone / R radio / J401 navigation
fuse 4 > J525 amp
fuse 5 > J523 mmi 2g (I have no idea why they power this dash unit from a fuse back here)

So could be there's an issue with fuse 1 and both the R41 and R199 are unpowered. Check the voltage on the plugs themselves. For the R41 changer, it appears 12v goes to pin 2, ground is on pins 1 and 4? For the R199, it's a 12-pin plug with 12v on pin 7 and ground on pin 1.

now control head is not working, while yesterday it was working perhaps I did something stupid with fuses. Which is the fuse in charge for control head?
Here the pics of the 2 fuses boxes I touched, if you see 7.5a where you expect 5a that's coz this morning I didn't find 5a and the guy at the shop said 7.5 it's not a problem. Please advise if I'd get 5a, I can rush now somewhere else.
Thanks again for you help

Yes, I'm familiar with the fuses. Your first pic is panel F, the "right rear". Your second pic is panel D, the "passenger end of dash". I detailed the relevant specific fuses in my prior post. Note, the fuses in both of these count "from the bottom". The fuses in the panel C, "driver end of dash", count from the top.

If we look at panel D column 1 (black), you have two 7.5A in there; all four should be 5A. So 1-4 empty, 5-8 5A, 9-12 empty.
If we look at panel D column 2 (brown), looks fine except the 7.5A in 1 should be a 5A.

So having 7.5A in place of 5A, is that an issue? From an intelligent mind perspective, no. But I do know of one thread where the guy said he replaced the 15A with a 7.5A and things started working (different fuse, in his case). I think he didn't give the whole story and something else was wrong with the 15A fuse or something else was additionally done.

Moving to the panel F picture:
column "B" (black): fuse 1 should be a 5A
column "C" (brown): fuse 3 is one of those new 7.5A, but it should be a 7.5A, so that's fine; the orange 5A in that column fuse 5 is the fuse for the J523
column "D" (red): looks fine

So all in all, I don't think you need to mess with fuses. Everything is fine enough.

If the J523 is lacking 12v at this point, you might need to recheck the plug to it, and the fuse for it. On the J523, the 20-pin plug, power on red/white on pin 1, ground on brown on pin 2. Do you measure 12v from 1 to 2 on the 20-pin plug?

And finally it works, thanks a lot. I just replaced J523 fuse and everything works now. Prolly today I put a broken fuse in J523, since it was working yesterday.
Now someday I'd clean up the mess with fuses, for the front I have schema from the panel. For the booth I see several different indication, yours are different from the ones I find on the internet which are different again from what I found on Elsa, I'm a bit confused but that's not a problem at all right now.

So my friend, come to Italy you and your family be my guests :-) If I show up in Atlanta I'll invite you for dinner, but it's about 10 years I don't come to USA.
Btw today while waiting for your feedback I was bored and nothing else to test, so I decided to remove my ECU and read it with ktag, seems it works..so I'll have something else to play with/ Do you happen also to know about mapping? I know more or less what to change with the proper sw, but I've some doubts about the writing back the file, perhaps I can check on some other thread/forum

Thanks thanks and thanks again

You have to be specific when talking fuses on a B8. B8.0 >MY09 (MMI 2G era) is different from B8.0 MY10> (MMI 3G era) is different from B8.5. I was using US spec MY08/MY09 A5 chart as a reference, from the Audi wiring diagrams. So RoW spec with a TDI might be a little different. But be sure to not be looking at MY10+ diagrams, which is most what I find on the Internet when looking up "B8 fuses".

Glad it's all resolved out, for the MOST part [:D]

Sorry, never played with ECM tuning. mhhauto.com has a lot of discussion involving the subjects of reprogramming and things. You might find relevant content and conversation there.

My nephew will actually be in Rome next month for a school trip. Closest I've been to Italy was a few weeks in Germany; they said don't take the rental to Italy, something about losing my tires. [;)]

Take care and good luck with the rest of the car.
