Dead car

I unhooked the battery in my 2013 A6 while doing some much needed maintenance under the hood. Purpose of unhooking it was to clear stored codes while I fixed the issues but when I reconnected the battery, the car won’t do anything now. When I first hook the battery back up, the windows will roll up and down, and I can use the MMI for as long as I want. But the Start/Stop button does nothing, I cannot disengage the parking brake, key fob doesn’t do anything with locks or starting. I assumed the fob somehow disconnected from the car since the MMI says “The number of programmed keys has not yet been transmitted.” but I do not get a No key detected message or anything like that. I’ve checked all fuses, battery in remote and car are both good, even tried putting the fob against the spot on the dash to no avail. I’m stumped as is my Audi guru that I go to for his wisdom. If anyone has any idea what might be wrong I would appreciate the info. I’m really hoping it’s not keys needing to be programmed because I don’t want to tell the wife we have to pay hundreds of dollars just to make the key that already worked before, work again.

Is the battery in good shape, and do you have a batter tender/charger? Almost sounds like dying battery - coincidentally….?

The battery is almost brand new, fully charged. I also tried jumping it off with no difference. I Can listen to the radio even with the key in the house and the battery out of it. It doesn’t change anything with the key fob in the car or not. Also doesn’t show the “no key detected” message which doesn’t make sense to me. I’m worried I won’t be able to even use VCDS anyways since I can’t turn the ignition on to communicate through the obd port. My regular scanner and my HPTUNER set up can’t communicate at all.

There is an interesting Technical Bulletin for when a car won't start, due to a battery related issue. The TSB states "The motronic engine control module power supply relay, J271, is not functioning properly. Because the J271 relay controls battery voltage (Terminal 30) via a ground signal sent from the ECM, numerous faults can occur in multiple control modules when it is not functioning properly." So as Audisthesia wrote, a full scan is really necessary for the knowledgeable folk here to be able to help.

I replaced the air injection pump, the transmission cooler valve, intake gaskets and cleaned the intake ports. Codes were P2735, P0491 and P0492. Trans cooler circut open, air injection system insufficient flow bank 1 and 2

I understand completely. I ordered a Ross Tech overnight and it will be here tomorrow hopefully. I will figure out how to get power to the system enough to use the obd port and get a scan as soon as it comes in so I can post it.

Since the canbus isn't able to communicate with the BCM its activating the immobilizer. Make sure that every connector is installed properly and that no wires got pinched/cut during the work that was performed

Gotcha I’ll give that a shot and check everything again with a fine tooth comb. How do I know if it’s the Bcm in the trunk or the one under the dash? I just got the vcds today so I’m learning as I go

I’ve checked everything again, no luck. I’m just going to buy both BCMs used on eBay and see if one will make it work. I Can program it if it turns out to be the issue

UPDATE: to anyone who has been following this turns out BCM 2 was fried. Ordered a used one of eBay that matched the numbers on the casing and now everything is working again except my key. Hopefully I just have to get a new key programmed since I was unable to read the long coding on the original Bcm 2 to replicate it on the new one I installed.

Only thing I can think of was when I unhooked the battery and hooked it back up positive terminal last. It arced pretty good and since then it gave me problems. The only other stuff I touched was all under the supercharger. There aren’t any electronics in there that would have caused this I don’t think

Took it to Audi dealer a few days ago. Just got the quote today.

Absolutely best case, $1800. Not as best case, 2800. Worst case…around 6k or so depending on how many modules were locked up.

Apparently the old Bcm probably bricked multiple other modules, or me installing a used Bcm could have as well. If nothing else is locked, they can mirror the original to the used unit and program a new key. If not, new Bcm and new keys. If other modules are locked then it’s almost not even worth fixing and just scrap the car honestly. It’s a 10 year old car, another 10k just to make a it function like it should is insane. Thank you all for your help.

Wow, that's terrible! I don't understand why engineers design things in a manner that may allow such a level of failure. If you do scrap the car, since you have already invested in Ross Tech your new car should be an RS!

We pair good used modules all the time with ODIS (what Audi/VW uses) all the time. There shouldn't be any reason why they wouldn't be able to get a replacement module to work and to make the immo happy again.
