Ok, I have my car in the shop as I rarely do. I probably do about 90% of the work on my vehicles, if for no other reason than to prevent stuff like this.

I searched out a local indy shop with good reviews because I didn't feel like installing the catless downpipes and I figured I would go ahead and have them do my motor mounts while they're at it.

Well they are struggling with the motormounts. I went by there today and my car has been on the lift for 2 days because they cant figure it out.

They cross referenced the parts 034 sent as did I and they showed up as the correct part.

They told me the mounts were too tall.

Here is the pic I snapped.

https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/1015668130879647964/1109638715015442492/20230520_182527.jpg

So that is my trashed factory mount in the middle, completely ripped all the way around and void of fluid.

What I told them, is that if it were filled with fluid, they would be the same height, and they just need to jack the motor up more. I could have possibly sounded like an asshat when I said that, but am I off base here? I then pulled the broken mount down to match the others.

I told them if they felt like they needed to get a factory mount, they could do that, but I feel like a non broken factory mount would be roughly the same. Am I wrong here? Did I get sent the wrong part? Is there a pointer I can give them to help them out? I realize because I was a mazda tech 15 years ago that doesn't qualify me as a pro on anything these days (of you need help on a 20 year old mazda I am your guy) but I've replaced my share of motor mounts and you've kind of just got to move the engine around until things line up in my experience.

I did mine myself a few weeks ago. I was surprised at how much MORE I had to lift the motor after taking out the old mounts in order to get the new ones in .. probably 2"

Not all highly reviewed shop are good. Many got good review because of random vacuuming cars during oil change or even a quick wash. I usually ask if they done Audi or not because I honestly don't want to be a guinea pig.

Yeah, odd that. Who knew you would have to lift something up more to replaced the collapsed one. I bet they may be a little higher, and will probably compress with age, which is probably by design. I would think there would be enough wiggle room to make that happen considering the whole damn engine can be lifted out. I don't know, I'm not working on it. I had actually planned to do these myself, it looked simple enough without a lift, I figured I could swing it in an evening but also I figured they would be in the area changing the cat pipes out, so why not have them do it and save myself the hassle.

So, these guys specialize in BMW and Audi. The guy I talked to on facebook in our Audi group worked there and he seemed knowledgeable, and everyone in the Audi group recommended them. I didn't ask what work they had done for them, but they also had pictures of cars they had worked on and what they had done (a thermostat replacement on an RS7 comes to mind). The guy working on my car definitely wasn't the one I talked to on facebook. When I got there today, they were taking some larger 500-600 horsepower turbo (judging by the size) apart on the back of a flatbed truck. I went and asked what was going on and talked to the guy working on it, then the owner came up to me and said "we'll try a couple of more things" so I'm not sure what else they were going to try. The guy working on it had drawn some diagram on his phone showing me how the holes didn't line up, that is when I picked up the stock part and moved the middle bolt hole down and said "now they're the same size." Which pretty much ruined his argument, lol. Like I said, I could have easily come off as an A-Hole.

Edit: On a side note, this is how we used to upgrade/repair motor mounts back in the day... good to see people are still at it.

Ya, I will admit, the delta was way more than I expected, and I was freaking out for a little bit lol.

I did mine with Quick jacks and an engine support bar.

I sold my cherry picker some time back, or I would have just done it myself. I guess I could have picked up an engine support bar, I could also rent bays in the base auto shop for $6 an hour, and dropped the subframe a little with the engine supported and squeezed it out like that.

I started looking at stock ones, they are a little shorter. If they stick a stock one in there, I'll just end up having to do it myself later. At least I won't have a floppy engine.

I really could not believe the difference it made. The passenger side was done by the dealer before I got the car at 44k. It was still in good shape, but the drivers was shot, at 69k (had been bad for a few thousand.). Replaced both with the 034, and could barely tell I had started the engine compared to the vibration I was getting before.

I couldn't find a list of dimensions for either the OEM or 034 mount. At the 034 website they have pictures of both cut in half. Certainly when the OEM is empty of fluid, it will lose height compared to the solid 034. Maybe my ignorance speaking, but why not raise the engine a bit more as did ZaubA6 to drop in the 034? Maybe the answer is to contact 034 and ask about dimensions and installation.

Maybe I am seeing things, but isn't the old worn mount a 4.0T mount and the new 034 ones are 3.0T mounts?

Hmm, well my car is definitely a V6. I got it at like 52k, I can't tell where anyone had changed the mounts but who knows. I wonder if it is a year difference thing? I think my shop should have reached out to 034 if they had questions on it. I'll email them and see what they say.

OK
So a 2103 A7 3.0T mount is obviously and definitely what you pulled out. (Latest OE p/n 4G0199381LF)

The issue I believe is the 034 mounts are for a B chassis.
I understand their fitment guide also say C7, but clearly they are very different looking mounts. Are they interchangeable...shrug...I don't know that.
My opinion is that 034 makes some nice stuff and usually they know what they are doing, so maybe give them a chat/call.
The "height difference" as the shop indicated may make no difference as perhaps the import part is if the center bolt hold and side bolt holes are located the same and nothing interferes with anything else.

This is why you need to stay involved here and not defect to the E-Tron crowd!

Well, they got the mounts in. My cats were starting to die a little bit too. The guy said he had never worked on a car with the motor mounts so trashed.

Here is a shot inside one of the cats.

Good news, the shop came in like a champ today and finished it!

Bad news, the car is loud AF and needs cats, I can't deal with the smell.

Is JHM the only folks who make the catted downpipes for this?

And what kind of smell is it ...? I only have a CAT back exhaust ... which fuel type are you burning ...?

My APR CAT back seemed very loud at first ... now, to me, it's awesome, have received a lot of great comments at the 'next' red light intersections ...

Uncatalyzed exhaust smell. In fairness, the last car I decatted ran E85, which is a more pleasant smell I suppose. I just have an OE exhaust, but I deleted the center resonator which was a mistake, as it made the car sound ricey and farty, now it is extra ricey and farty. The butt dyno did pick up some gainz probably because my cats were failing.

I went ahead and purchased the JHM baffled downpipes with cats, hopefully that would take care of it. I had planned on buying them, just not this soon.

I highly recommend JHMs catted downpipe. I think it'll solve the issue you're looking at and the sound is a great plus.

Yeah, I ordered them, but maybe I made a mistake by ordering them through uro tuning because they were $50 less there, but they haven't shipped yet. I am hoping they take care of it. For what it is worth, I got the ones with the cats and the baffles, but not the x pipe. I don't know if JHM makes them as they are ordered or they keep a stock of them. I should have just ordered directly from JHM, they always take care of me.

There is actually a dude in Houston in the classifieds that has an AWE exhaust for a good deal, but I have dropped a 4 months worth of car budget in the past week, so I may need to let my finances recover. I don't like to let my checking account get below a certain dollar value for whatever reason (it is an amount that most Americans would say is too high, but I'm just a weirdo I guess).
