View Full Version : Resonated AWE Touring - where to go from here?

Hey guys,

I've purchased the AWE Touring exhaust for my S5 about 2 years ago and loved the sound and volume, but since I daily my car, I had to get the resonated downpipes to cut down the drone (I have a DSG).
It helped with the drone and I love the tone of the sound, but I got used to it and would love to get it louder.

Now, I am not sure where to go from here as there are several options. Not sure which one would be best for me.

1. Go with test pipes

I've seen videos on Youtube of people with my exhaust set up + test pipes and I really like the sound. It seems like drone should also not be too much of an issue since the resonators still do a pretty good job with that.
Only thing I am not sure about is how much difference in volume is there when compared to factory cats. Is it closer to AWE Touring with stock downpipes or more in realm of non-resonated downpipes?
The obvious downside is the smell. The upside is the cost is fairly minimal as I can get the test pipes produced locally + the ability to go Stage 2 and crackle.

2. Convert Touring to Track

This could potentially give me the increase in volume while keeping the tone of the exhaust the same. The thing I do not know is whether the drone will be worse (I think it will, since the rear mufflers have resonators too), but will it be the same/much worse as stock downpipes with AWE Touring or somewhere in between?
The upside is the cost again would be fairly minimal as I can get the rear pipes produced locally, so no need to order from USA again (I'm from Europe).

3. Go with stock/non-resonated downpipes and soundproof the trunk better

I'm not sure if this is a viable option but I saw some people here use Dynamat in their trunk to reduce the amount of drone, which would theoretically allow me to run stock/non-resonated downpipes and not have too much drone.

4. Get custom rear mufflers with valves

This would probably be an ideal option, albeit a bit pricey. I know a guy who makes custom exhausts and he would be able to make the rear mufflers with valves, but I am not sure if he would be able to recreate the AWE Touring sound that I enjoy so much.
Is it the rear mufflers that make it sound this specific or is it more the front of the exhaust that makes it sound like that?

Anyway, as you can see, there's quite a few options and I am just not sure which one to choose. If I had to order the options myself, I'd probably put test pipes last as I really don't want the car to smell. Best option would probably be the custom rear section, but I just don't know if it's gonna sound the same.

Looking forward to hear your thoughts.

5. Test pipes + JHM catted/baffled downpipes

If your goal is sound, upgrade exhaust pieces but don’t touch the cats otherwise you’ll introduce serious rasp. I’d you want sound + power, go test pipes but the catted/baffled downpipes to eliminate the rasp that 3.0s are notorious for

Making the touring sound louder will change the tone. You’ll introduce more engine sound.
Non res DP is the most common with touring.

Thanks for the tip! I've watched some videos and it sounds like a nice setup. Also it shouldn't smell too much due to having HFC. Drone should also not be much of an issue.
I see you have this exact setup based on your signature - how would you say the volume is? For example in comparison to stock cats, stock DPs and AWE Touring. Is it similar or more closer to non-resonated DPs with stock cats?

Thanks!

I have no issues with test pipe/fuel smell, or drone/rasp. It’s louder but a nice refined sound, and really opens up tastefully under WOT. I sound deadend my entire interior, so it’s not loud in the cabin, but can definitely be heard outside the car.
