View Full Version : C7 S7 shakes noticably between when going over 40mph. Possible causes?

My 2014 S7 has a pronounced shake when driving over 40mph. The shake is most noticeable when coasting, but does occur under acceleration. Wheel alignment completed recently, and tires rotated/balanced. Replaced both front wheel bearings a few months back. An independent shop replaced lower control arms, as the bushings were worn, but shaking continues.

Any ideas on what might be the problem?

Driveline center support bearing?

I was thinking that, but the shaking is less noticable when coasting. Would the car shake/shimmy under acceleration if it were the center support brace?

Driveline center support bearing?

I was thinking that, but the shake/shimmy is more noticable when the car is coasting. I would imagine that if it were the center support bearing, acceleration would make it worse since the axle is actually rotating.

Motor mounts, perhaps?! [emoji1334]

possibly tires if it goes away over certain speeds. if its a shuddering that feels like its under the rear seat and happens under hard acceleration or launch, then it is the driveshaft support bearings.

There are a number of other things that could cause it but these would be my best guesses

It occurs mostly under acceleration. When I added the JHM carrier insert mod to my car, I got bad vibration at 63+mph. It would still vibrate until it was below that vibration threshold. When I removed it back to stock, the vibration was gone. I sold my insert to another member where is carrier bearing was wearing out. When he installed it, he said it solved his vibration problem. Way of checking is to remove the chassis cover and move the driveline and see how much play you have or if it sags. You have eliminated tires and alignment. Many youtube videos on checking that bearing. The JHM mod is ez to do, just a pain due to access.

Do you have "cylinder on demand" active? You can check with your on-board computer. If the shake/shimmy occurs when the car is in C.O.D. mode, maybe like PassionForAudi suggests you have a bad motor mount.

Dealer told me my motor mounts are showing some leakage when servicing a recall, but said nothing too urgent. This was a few months back, before the shaking started. Not sure what all the symptoms are, but I would imagine the shaking would be going on all the time, not just between 60 - 80mph.

One or several of your wheels could be bent. I’ve had this on my car. The surprising thing is that the wheel will balance out almost perfectly, but still shake at high speeds. They have to specifically inspect for a bent wheel, it doesn’t show up on the wheel balancing.

Have you been driving in heavy snow ? Common for a wheel to load up and go out of balance. It has happened to me this winter and to my daughters
VW Atlas a few days ago.

My Cousin Vinny had this happen while driving in the mud in Alabama.

Sorry that it’s taken me awhile to respond. I noticed that someone below mentioned that it could also be a bent wheel, that’s very true. The slightest of those little headaches could cause an issue. I mentioned the motor mounts due to the fact that I went through similar symptoms back when I had my C7 A7. I’d get a horrendous type of vibration once I’d come up to a stop light but once I was moving again it’d stop completely and then come back once I’d idle again. For me it was the motor mounts.
