View Full Version : Lap timer shift light not showing in HUD

2013 S6. I've had the lap timer enabled since I bought the car in 2019. I just read that the shift light that you seen when you DIS is in "Lap Timer" mode, and the transmission is in manual...should appear in the HUD. For some reason mine is not, and still only appears in the DIS between the gauges. I also don't think I'm getting any Night Vision assist warnings in the HUD or on the DIS screen when I have NV activated.
I have ALL of the settings in the "Car" menu set to include as much as possible in the HUD (Nav, Night Vision, etc.). Are there more settings in VCDS or Hidden (green) menu that I need to change so that I see the shift light in the HUD, and not just between the gauges? I really want to get this working, because that would be a pretty useful feature.
Thanks!
-Greg
IIRC there are a few different software versions and a 2013 might be quite early and behave differently than even a '14 or '15 like mine.
You also have to be in manual mode and it only shows up right before redline.
...and I believe also if you turn off your hud, then it appears on the screen between the dials.

10-4 on all the above. I have the lap timer enabled and in manual (paddle) mode, I get the lights between the gauges, but they don't show up on the HUD above the coolant temp. If it comes down to the software version, I have done a firmware and maps update last year - would that not solve the software issue (if there is one)? I just took it for a test drive again and the red shift light was flashing up a storm on my DIS, but nothing in the HUD.
This is really frustrating.

Out of curiosity what info does show up in the HUD? Mine shows speed, oil temp, drive mode, gear, navigation instructions and shift light.

In “Assist” it shows: speed, lane departure, cruise distance, cruise speed, nav directions
In “Lap Timer” it shows: transmission mode (D, S, or M), gear, coolant temp, and speed. No shift light - that ONLY appears in my DIS between the gauges.
I took a look tonight.
My 2015 has the shift light in the HUD but NOT in the DIS. Even with the HUD shut off it does not come up in the DIS.
So perhaps that is the software differences I speak of. (Not MMI software, but HUD and/or instrument control modules)
Some have it in DIS and not in HUD
Some have it in HUD and not DIS
While still others (perhaps C7.5 or true RS7's) have it in both.
Honestly I do not know though.

I have a C7.5 and I don't have it in both, yet someone on YT with a C7 does. With mine, it's either the HUD or the dash.

Sorry, not both simultaneously but rather either-or....I was not aware any S car had them both simultaneously only perhaps the RS7.
Still it seems to be a mixture of versions.

Interesting. On an A6/A7 too. I wonder if that makes the difference or perhaps a difference in coding OBD11 vs. VCDS (but from the video looks virtually the same.)

By software then are you referring to firmware in the individual modules? I assume then that those modules would not be updated by MMI firmware updates?
Do we know of anyone with a 2013 or older that has successfully had the shift lights in the HUD?

That is what I think, but do not know for sure.
It is highly doubtful the instrument cluster firmware is updated with the MMI update.
Back in the day if someone bricked their MMI by applying a firmware update wrong somehow, it did not also brick their instrument cluster so I am fairly certain they are separate.

Any ideas on where I might go for a definitive answer on why this doesn't work in my HUD?

No, sorry.
I still believe it is baked into the HUD and instrument cluster in some way. Hence maybe why they waited and only had it enabled on the RS's from the factory. So even if you flip a bit in the coding on A and S models there is no consistency of the units themselves that it will perform exactly the same on all cars I guess.

I enabled lab timer on my C7 A7 and it shows up on both my cluster and HUD however, it only shows up in the HUD when I have the lap timer selected on my cluster. Which I think is kind of annoying

I hear you. However when you have the “Assist” set in your cluster, the HUD gives you a lot of different info: lane keeping, adaptive cruise distance, current speed, cruise control set speed. Wouldn’t be any more room for the shift light in that case.
I’m just bummed that for SOME REASON my S6 does everything everyone else’s car does, but the shift light will only appear in the DIS and not the HUD…when lap time is enabled and selected, I get the rest of the lap timer goodies like oil temp, gear selected, transmission mode (D, S, or M)…but the shift light stays between the gauges in the DIS. Super frustrating.
