View Full Version : Vented Catch Can to Save PCV?

So I saw some discussion about PCV's earlier and wanted to get the 'zines thoughts.
Could a vented catch can help lengthen the life of the PCV and keep the carbon away?
I changed my PCV in my B8 after it started consuming 1qt/2500 miles. After destroying the pcv and inspecting it thoroughly, there was nothing torn nor broken with the pcv diaphragm. it looked mint. That seemed to be evidence that some oil consumption occurs because the spring on the pcv is worn and gets tired from cycling open/closed. Because my new PCV was identical, and there are really no moving parts or clearances to the pcv which can get worn otherwise. Which leads me to want to get a vented catch can so the crankcase can constantly vent all the pressure it builds without trashing the PCV spring.
Yay or now way? What you think

remove your charger, paint your pcv white. it should provide ample protection like sunscreen and protect it.

Hmmm I never thought that the heat deflection from the black material vs white surface would make any difference in pcv longevity.... but I guess you might be onto something with that. Albeit it has nothing to do with a catch can, thank you for your input. Anyone else???
This is something I’m researching also. I’ve heard it’s not much help in the factory configuration, but the pvc relocation option has a bigger impact on carbon build up and ease of replacement. The Audi C7 Owners channel on YouTube shows this kit. I’m at a crossroad b/c I have the factory replacement and the car torn apart, but like the thought of the relocation and the catch can.

Perhaps look into 3.0T PCV relocation. These guys are getting close to a finalized package.

I am interested in more than PCV relocation. I mean that kit is a great mod, but it doesn't address that actual additional stress the pcv manages with higher pulley ratios. If the crankcase never has to create pressure, you could have a pcv last a lot longer no? Or is there something detrimental to open air crank breathing?

So youre recommending a kit that hasn't been on the market long enough to be tested vs an aftermarket solution to pcv longevity........hmmmm I guess I could bandwagon with you if theres room!

Pcv getting blown out isn't a normal routine...
A freshly replaced pcv in the OEM configuration should last plenty, and if it didn't, still cheaper than having replaced with a new OEM and THEN buying that relocation kit.... Just to replace the rubber every oil change

It'll maintain the same crankcase vacuum on a healthy engine regardless of boost pressure.
How many miles are you trying to get out of your pcv? Mine has been fine for 40k. When I changed it I don't think it was actually broken.

exactly. i replaced mine at 114k and it was fine. that relocation kit is NOT for folks who have already done the swap.

Im running a 3.3+ dual pulley ratio and in the 15,000 miles of life I'm starting to see more oil consumption in the last 6,000 miles. Other members have said going dual pulley and stop go traffic can kill a pcv in 12,000 miles with higher PR, so I'm investigating.

There's also that check valve in the breather hose to the intake that I wasn't aware I needed to change.
