a few weeks ago there was a noised that started to rattle inside my engine so i no longer drove the car, left it sit in the drive way until I had time to take it to the shop and when I did they told me I had internal engine problems and they recommend that i replace the engine all together. My check engine light has been on for about 2 months but only cuz of the idle control valve. I have a 97 A4 2.8. Is there any website were I may possibly purchase a used engine (preferably 30v, if the motors are swappable); or should I just total the car and purchase a new one? Thanx in advance

How many miles are on the car? When you're doing major repairs like that you have to take into consideration how much the car is worth and how much it's going to cost to buy a new engine and have it installed (not cheap...).
But to answer your question, there are sometimes complete engines for sale in the classifieds on here or on Audiworld.

Forget the S4 engine, i know someone that went V6 to 2.7t and its been months since its instlaled and it took about 7k in parts total to do the swap w/o paying anyone to put it in.

Get the 1.8T youll be happy and yes there are 1.8 guys on here w/ 2.8 trannys and love them but someone else would have to chime in to say if its an exact fitment

see if you can get an AEB, they supposed to be the strongest... you can use a 2.8 tranny with the 1.8t.

1997-1999 : AEB
2000 Only : ATW
2001 Only : AWM

you only need to go with AEB if you plan on doing some major upgrades like 350+hp. but other than that you will be fine with the ATW or AWM. AWM is the newest so it might easier to believe that it has less mileage on it than the other ones

Assuming the engine were bought cheap enough, is there a DIY anywhere on swapping to a 1.8t. Assuming the 1.8t came complete with ecu/sensors etc. Ie would the ecu wiring need changing, or would the T version plug in etc?

I have searched, just seeing this prompted the question

Sorry to hijack, i will turn it into my own post if you wish

if the car was in good condition nad that you still love your car, an engine swap will likely to cost less in the long run..

just got off the phone with the guys with the engine and he keeps insisting that a 1.8t swap is not gonna work becuz the trannys will not match up, and if I want to do a swap, i also need to purchase a new tranny, tranny computer, ecu and wiring harness

I am positive that the tranny will work... as long as its quattro if you are.

you are manual right?

you are manual right? yea that was my understanding of it as well. Yes I am manual...is there anyone on this board who has done a 2.8 12v swap to a 1.8t ?

I think one of the mounts on the tranny doesn't line up or something, but there is an easy fix. I think you use one of the 1.8T tranny mounts or something.

Hopefully someone else will clear that up.

i dont know that the 12v transmissions are the same as the 30v ones, that people swap into 1.8s...

i know i couldnt swap a 30v 2.8 tranny in my 97 without replacing some other stuff first, like the carbon fiber drive shaft and possibly the rear diff...
