Hey all, been a fan of the site since I bought my a6 4 years ago. We've been through alot, majority good, with very little needing done maintenance wise. My go fast upgrades don't count lol anyways..

Recently we are dealing with a front end rebuild. (Control arms, struts, axle, steering knuckle) But more specifically right now is the steering rack im arranging. I've ordered one online, cuz with everything I'm doing im not about to cough up full price! And it has a severed wire that seems to be attached and not replaceable? Wondering if this is repairable or if i should send it back and get a different one. I don't do much work myself on it, and won't pretend I do. Any help is appreciated.

MINE (severed wire) there is a yellow wire, that was under the protective covering that is severed.

Or, if it is removable. And replaceable. Could someone point me in the right direction? Thanks alot!

I see one wire that looks like it goes nowhere. Where is the other end of that wire? Or is it severed right at the harness plug? Harnesses can be repinned, and VAG makes repair wires.

Can you use the existing rack as a donor for that wire or was it damaged on your car as well? Do you have 2 parts damaged in the exact same way?

IIRC that wire is removable at both ends. I've looked at it on my 13 A5 and 14 S6 and they're both the same. If the guys that sold it to you won't make it good, there's probably a car at the local Pull-A-Part with one you could cut the plug off and repin if it's fixed in place... or just swap if it's removable! Find out by damaging the junkyard car before attempting on yours. Best $2 you'll spend on learning!

Audi plugs are pretty easy to repin with one of those little pin/push sets. Recommend adding one to your toolbox if you want to increase your abilities!!

I appreciate the replies!

My rack should be fine to use as a donor in that aspect i would think. It's the passenger side that's pooched/damaged and the cause for repair. Nothing wrong with the rest of it. All wires are perfectly intact. Harness etc. It's just that 5inch ish wire on the "new" one I ordered that's severed right at the plug. Part isn't labeled in any diagrams I've seen of rack components or I'd describe it much more accurate. Apologies for my lack of knowledge.

Again I appreciate you all 🙏🏻🤘🏻
