Hello guys,

My windshield need replacement, and am being told that it will need to be recalibration after replacement. Is that needed?
Whats the cost for a windshield now days? A local glass guy wants $700, no calibration, Safelite auto glass want $1100 with calibration. Is it really needed?

Please advise.

I had my windshield replaced, by Safelite, several years ago with OEM glass, because I have HUD and ACC, and did not have any calibration performed. Everything works just fine since the replacement. If you do not have HUD non OEM glass should work.
I believe I payed Safelite about $1200 for OEM glass.

I had safelite as well, it was close to just under 1200 and that was OEM and the recalibration. Last year..

There are other threads about this, such as " Progressive declined my OEM windshield request.. Safelite good enough?". If the car has HUD, then OEM glass plus calibration seems to be a must. If the car has any system with a camera viewing through the windshield, then OEM glass and calibration may also be required.

My Audi dealership does their own glass replacement, and my insurance covered the OEM parts, install + calibration at the dealership. Total was around $2,600 parts and labor.
They did an excellent job.

They did an excellent job.Stealers, not dealer. Everything is over priced for no damn reason. Lucky insurance paid for it.

Had my windshield replaced a while back. It was like 2k at a private window place with OEM glass. They were never able to code the front camera properly. His computer wouldn't do one of the calibrations. Huge pita.

Audi doesn't do it. Called them up just to see how much it would be. They use Allstate Glass, thn Audi would calibrate it after for $1200.

If insurance is paying for the cost of re-calibration, is it necessary to get it done at the dealer?
What other systems get recalibrated beside the windshield Camera?

Just replaced my windshield today. Non-OEM glass. No calibration done.

HUD is turned off. I find it annoying.

$540 installed.

We have State Farm so it only costs me the cost of my comprehensive deductible ($250). Ours is a 12 with none of the goodies so aftermarket glass works fine for me. HUD and a few other things need factory glass and a calibration. I want to say the Audi glass was $600 but our Jeep glass was $260 and not even worth filing a claim

We have a local glass shop that does great work so I go to them for chips and glass replacement. Back in 2019 we wound up replacing front glass in both cars almost the same week. Call em up and ordered the glass, each was in and out quickly

Had mine replaced late last year non-OEM glass. Was originally going to go with Safelite, but the tech started doing the install then got a call/notice on his phone saying it would need calibration. Because of this I would have to take it into their location which was like 45mins away and it would have been something like $1900.00 and "possibly an all day process"... Did some calling around to friends and local shops and found a well known glass guy to my area and decided to go with him. From what I understand, the guy who replaced mine (has been doing auto glass for over 30 years) said as long as you don't unplug any sensors or turn the car ignition on or the motor over at any point during the replacement, then calibration is not needed. Took him like 2hrs and was around $250 if I remember correctly. Was less to come out of pocket then pay deductible via insurance or go through Safelite. Haven't had an issue since other than when Safelite came out to originally do the job the tech cracked my rear view mirror plastic interior cap. Didnt even tell me and we found out when the second shop went to start work on it. Otherwise completely satisfied w my decision. This is just my experience, and can't speak if there are possibly any other "special" methods, precautions, tools or skills/whatever... Just relaying the meat n potatoes of what the glass guy told me, please don't take my word for it and do your own research before hand before you decide on an Indy glass guy, TBH the main reason I went with my guy was he came highly recommended by several shops and friends and also literally had pictures on his phone of other A/S/RS7's and other Audi's that he had replaced the windshields on in/at his shop and all fairly recently. Goodluck!

I forgot to mention my car does not have HUD but has ACC and rain sensors. If I remember correctly he mentioned that it didn't matter what sensors my car had and wouldn't need calibration because of the protocol he mentioned above of not unplugging any sensors or turning ignition on.

Anyone replace their glass with acoustic glass with no calibration? How much if so?

The glass people didnt want to replace my windshield due to the ACC not functioning.. said they cannot calibrate the safty systems. Said it needs to be fixed first and all the safty system functional.
My insurance doesnt want to cover the full cost if i go through the dealer. So am kinda stock in a loop.

have your service writer draft up the fact that prestige level with HUD require OE Glass with the calibration due to the replacement. I had that done with my rep/SA at my local audi, and insurance took care of everything

So they all of that to be working properly before they can replace the glass and calibrate. Am dealing with Safelite.
