So I found out all the procedures that I need to go through to get my CA plates and license. Being that my car is from VA and I have a few mods I am worried that my car won't pass either smog or the visual test when they look at my car. Currently I have a Milltek exhaust and a FMIC. The exhaust has the stock cat back on cause I thought that it might help with smog. What should I expect from this situation? Will I pass with the exhaust and fmic piping showing in the front??thx in advance for any help

Just take it in and smog check it, and pray it passes. I learned the hard way too.

As for the visual check, I even put my front plate back on and the lady didn't even look at the front. All she did was take down the VIN and one other number. That was at the San Clemente DMV, by the way.

What did you have done to your car at the time?

just take it to any smog place, preferably in the shady areas of town. put stock exhaust on the car. your FMIC shouldnt affect it that much if at all unless you have turbo upgrades and no cats

Money talks man. Go to the SFV and go into small shops and ask if they can pass your car and how much it will cost. No more than 100 dollars.

I passed smog with my neuspeed exhaust and a racetec fmic. Shouldn't be a problem

They most likely wont care about the FMIC because it doesnt really effect emmisions. there also pretty unlikely to even know what it is. if all you have is the exhaust you should pass no problem.

well I wasn't worried about the fmic affecting the smog , i was more worried about that for the visual inspection they will do in order to get my plates. I'll just go down the street to a test done and see what happens

Ive got tx plates, tx reg, nj drivers lic, and i live in san diego...heh.

My inspection and reg is up...what steps do i have to take? Do i have to get cali plates & license now? I sorta like having my out of state NJ in case, but what steps do i need to take (where to go, whats it cost, etc..)?

Thanks guys.

Do you live in California, or do you just go to school here? If you've been living here for more than a few months and did not get your CA license and registration then thats illegal. I wouldn't mention that to the DMV. It was just over $200 to get my license and registration here. They'll need a smog and visual check as well.

You'll have to pass the California DMV written test to get a license. They'll stamp a hole in your old one, and issue you a paper temp. while they send the real one in the mail.

Yeah, lived here for 11 months now (not for school, I graduated in '02). So do i need to make an appointment or do i just drive down and waste a whole saturday at DMV? Do i need to smog check it before hand?

Any suggestions for the San Diego area?

Id still prefer to keep my NJ license, so maybe ill say i lost it at the beach...and theres no way im putting on a front plate...how can i get around that when they give me my new plates? Im not worried about driving around...i havent had one on this long.
