View Full Version : Brake reset?

About a week and half ago I replaced all 4 rotors, brake pads, and brake pad wear sensors on my 2016 S7. Everything has been great until last night, while driving my brake light came on and it is telling me to replace brake pads. Is there a brake reset in ODB11 somewhere that I missed? Or is it possible that one of the sensor wires came loose from the pads? Any information would be great.

I would take a look at your brake pad sensors. I just did my brakes as well and they are easy to accidentally put on backwards. Once the little wire in them gets cut, it triggers the low pad life alert. You might have to replace one or more if it got cut by incorrect installation or if some sort of debris caught it and cut it

I suspect the pad wear sensor came loose or fell apart. I had this same issue happen to me earlier this year.

I was planning on putting up on the lift tonight and inspecting the sensor wires. Thanks.

I have been dealing with a similar problem for awhile. Then my cat broke at the flange. So I haven't driven it in a month.
The recommended fix was to replace the sensors. They are cheap and easy to do.

The brake sensors (2 of them) are on the drivers side of the car, they clip into the caliper. You can get replacements for about $10 each off rock auto. What triggers the brake error light on the dash is the circuit being open. If functioning as they are designed, this means the pads got low and broke the little wire in the sensor causing an open circuit, thus tripping the error light. They can be damaged by working on your brakes and breaking, after all they are plastic and brakes get hotter than you know what, making the plastic on these little buggers brittle. If you dont give a damn about the sensors and never want to see the light again, you could cut the end off the sensor and twist the wires together closing the sensor circuit.... But for $10, you can just pop a new one in, its simple enough.

I did replace them when I did the brakes, but when I had it on the lift last night the rear one is loose. I was able to push it back into the slot on the brake pad, but I am thinking it is going to work its way back out. The front one is very tight and doesn't move at all. No light as for now, so I guess time will tell whether it will come back on.

You have a wire... the rotor eats the wire and breaks it... light comes on. The only way to get it to turn off is to make the circuit whole again. Simply pushing it back into place does not "reset" the fault.
You either have a sensor that is "broken" but manipulating it caused it to reconnect and clear the fault (could be a bad wire farther up in the sheathing), or you had a loose connector that re-seated enough to clear the fault but will likely return.
As I said... very simple system with only one way to fault and clear it.
Cheers,

I’m having to replace my front sensor after a brake change. I had the mechanic hold off on the sensor as it was over $200 from Audi and over $100 on most euro websites. Just want to make sure I can replace the sensor with the caliper still on. I’ve watched a few brake change videos and they are obviously replacing the sensor while caliper and pads are off the rotor. Jack car, wheel off and turn steering to fill right. Seems like that would give me access but not sure I’ll be able to get the sensor into the pad slot with caliper on. Any of y’all done this? Thx

The sensors are around $10 each from FCP Euro.
Once the wheel is off, you simply pull them straight out, unplug. Install is reverse of removal.
Slide into place, plug it in.

However, They dont seem too bad for a 2016 RS7.

2016 s7 front sensor is $25 at Autozone, less than $20 fro Advance Auto. No need to spend $200 for genuine Audi unless you enjoy pissing away money
