View Full Version : Other Maintenance while Carbon Cleaning

I'm getting my car carbon cleaned next week, along with getting some performance parts installed (APR coils, spark plugs, 034 TB). If there any other preventative maintenance I should do while they are in there? Car just hit 120k.

Timing chains. 120k pushing Stage 2... not an IF but a when. My buddies 14 S4 on Stage 2 had a worn guide and a cracked tensioner!
They already have 1/2 the motor apart to service it... do the chains and add a lot of peace of mind!
I tend to overdo once so I don't have to do it twice though!

Doing chains will mean a motor out repair and at least $5000 if you are paying for labor.
With the carbon cleaning since they will have the supercharger off then get the thermostat, water pump, PCV, fuel pressure sensor, and coolant sensor done then as well unless they are fairly new already.

This is the first I have heard of these fuel and coolant sensors.

Agreed with the basic stuff... but with this car being in the time zone for questionable chains and tensioners and chains typically being good for about 120k... unless you know for certain their history... I personally couldn't drive them much farther.
My thought would be on the cars longevity and if you are Stage 2 and doing a carbon cleaning, you intend to enjoy it. As mileage goes up, so should ones scope of maintenance.
$1200 in timing parts. Another $1600 labor (what I was quoted for my buddies 3.0t) and most of the stuff you mentioned comes free (customer supplied) or at a reduced rate.
I don't gamble, so I err on the side of longevity. Especially how hard I drive them!
Buy once, Cry once. Be a shame to do all that work and pop a chain when you see what it'll do after the cleaning! Actually seen that happen![headbang]
Our whole life is choices. I try to make cheaper ones these days!

24:15 roughly on the FCP Euro video shows putting the fuel pressure sensor back in and tightening. $38.XX from FCP that you might as well change while the SC is off

16:26 roughly shows the temp sensor on the crossover pipe. $9 part from FCP that you can swap out while the coolant is already drained.
For Botbasher: That is a damn good price, I was quoted the 5k from an indie shop and confirmed from an Audi tech if he did the job on the side. I have seen quotes for $7500 from the dealer. I paid about $2,000 in parts and a few other goodies and did the work at home. It took longer than it would at a shop but it was my very first engine pull and I was learning as I went. I did belts, motor mounts, SC oil, serviced aboth diffs and transfer case. Broke the brittle plastic hoses to the valve covers as well. I was at 204,000 to 205,000 miles when I did mine.

This is the first I have heard of these fuel and coolant sensors.
Unless there has been faults or physical damage on these they are pretty robust. This is one that since the SC is coming off it's easy to do, but the SC takes about 15 minutes to remove (didn't used to but you get better with repetition) so they wouldn't be high on my list. T-Stat, pump and PCV for sure though if you don't have history on them and the SC is already out!
T-Stat is a known issue as is the coolant pipe across the front of the motor. Audi and their plastic pipes drive me crazy!
Pump is a wear item. I usually decide after listening to the bearing and play on the shaft.
PCV gets baked and beat under the SC and there's no real test for it, so I'd just do it!
We all have our comfort zones and 100k on chains or belts is mine.
YMMV

I could not have started the car much less driven it at that mileage... my anxiety about it would have kept me from pushing the button!

When you tell them take your time... 2, 3, 4 weeks... what ever... you generally get better prices in my experience.

PS... if the Audi tech told you the same price for side work... he was screwing you as bad as the shop was! Same price and no warranty!?!? F That!!!

I am at 221K almost 222K and doing the t-stat, water pump, and PCV for the first time in the cars life this weekend. Was hoping to push it to fall but the t-stat crapped on me last week. Water pump bearing is good but the body seal has an ever so slight drip that I have been living with because I did not want to remove the SC up to this point.
Sorry to de-rail this thread Adam.

Timing chains, PCV and motor mounts were done at around 85k.
