View Full Version : Increased oil consumption

I've had oil consumption since I bought the car, used to go about 1200 miles before the oil light came on and I'd add a quart, last time I was around 800 and just now the light came on and didn't make it to 400. Only thing different is I bought a box of 12qts and the last two times I've filled up actual quart containers instead of trying to eyeball it with the 5 gallon. Still highly doubt it would differ so drastically. I did just change the PCV recently but other than that haven't done anything.
B7 A4, 2.0T, stage 1 JHM, high flow cat, not quite to 108k.

EDIT: PCV valve, the only difference I see is the line points straight back on the old version and slanted on the newer. Trying to confirm if ECS sent me the wrong one.

Remove valve cover, see if the underside is cracked/seperated.

Any spots on the ground where you park? Burning oil smell?

oh and you may want to crawl under and disconnect the IC hoses .. i think you will have a ton of oil pouring out..

Sounds like you're fairly certain of what this is and I already feared a cracked head but I'm not a religious person so I guess I'll pray to the Universe. Oi.

Rather than explain I'm sure YouTube has info, about 10 bolts and a couple of hoses .. but that's after you get the coil packs off ..
Broken valve cover us the number one issue with these cars and oil consumption.
You don't have a cracked head .. the fact you even think that makes me suggest you get a mechanic or experienced diy guy to help you with this

I try to do as much as I can but I have never really been a car guy. I learn as I go and don't mess with things above my level. I've done far more with this car than I expected, but not without breaking a ton of tabs and stress. I'll check out a diy video to be sure, but I suspect you're right. Thanks again!

Maybe you got the wrong PCV? There are two versions depending on your engine code. Or more accurately, depending on the model of valve cover you have. Black (BWT engine, 2007-2008) is the later revision, Silver (BPG engine , 2005-2006) is the earlier revision.
Oil consumption is a tricky thing to nail down though. Sometimes its the Valvecover/PCV, other times its internal issues, other times its external leaks. I burn 1qt every 1400 miles like clockwork, and have since 2013. The mileage interval hasn't really changed at all, signalling to me that its an internal issue (damaged/worn piston rings). I know my oil cooler/filter housing is leaking a bit but thats a new problem and hasn't measurably changed my oil consumption.

This might be possible, I had to change the order and they told me it was done but knowing those guys... it did clear my CEL and corrected the idle.. to an extent lol
How can I tell which model it is? The only difference I notice on the site is the line on the diaphragm is slanted on the newer model. Can anyone confirm this or is every one different?? If it is then they sent me the one with the line straight back, which is the older. This has the split in 2005 though.

If it has a check valve, you need the newer, P revision. If no check valve in rear breather, you need the okder, R revision. Best way to check, cuz ya never know what a PO did..

Thought I'd share my experience with solving oil consumption on my 2007 a4 quatro 2.0:
Engine was freshly rebuilt with new pistons, rings, head rebuilt, new Borgwarner k03 turbo charger as well. After the rebuild it was consuming 1 qt every 450 miles... I was finding about 2 cups of oil in the intercoolers. The mechanic that rebuilt the engine bought and installed a new Vaico valve cover as part of the engine rebuild. After trying everything else to solve the issue I purchased a new OE Audi valve cover. This solved my oil consumption! No more oil being consumed!

Failed VC is prob the most common cause of oil consumption, on the b7. Esp if there's oil in your IC's. And only good option is genuine, unless you wanna go billet. Have seen many times, a brand new "oem" VC failing..
