View Full Version : Selling to a Private Party for an expensive car?

Had a question for y'all - typically, I've sold private party for less expensive vehicles (10-12k range). Anything higher than that has been a trade-in or through Vroom.

I've been kicking around the idea of selling my 2020 S4 Prestige and getting back into a smaller car. Anyways, dealerships and online were offering between 48 (dealer) - 53 (vroom) for mine. When I look at Autotrader and Cars, there isn't a single Prestige in 500 miles and very few throughout the states. With the Prestige package and Black Optic they seem to be between 59-65/66.

A. Do you see any reason to try to sell private party?
B. If you've sold a more expensive car private how do you do the transaction or protect yourself?

Thanks, I appreciate any opinions you might have.

Do I see any reason to sell private party? Are you willing to throw away $8K-$12K dollars for “convenience”? It all about private party in this secondary market. 2022 S4’s are 100% unchanged from ‘20-‘21. All dealers are going to offer you far below market value so they can make money, obviously. However, $48K for a vehicle that they will turn around and sell for upwards of $56K-$59K is disrespectful robbery. They will have to put $0 into the car other than a routine detail to sell it. If you advertise correctly, you might even have an out of state buyer that will buy sight unseen. Sell private, do not give away a nicely appointed vehicle to the vultures.

Opinion on selling a car that would be in that 55k-56k range? It's easy to deal with 12-13k in cash. ;) Do you recommend a direct deposit to account? or a Cashiers check?

EDIT: Anyone seen or used TRED before?

Not sure what you mean? My point is to sell it privately as you asked. If you’re looking for the quick sell, give it to a reseller and be done with it. I’m selling my 2021 private party. It books around $62k-$64k which is almost what I paid for the car itself. I’ve dropped a ton of cash on mods but they’re not recoverable in the secondary market. For reference, my local dealer offered me $58K. They’ll be able to turn around and resell the car in a week.

I’ve only ever felt comfortable setting up a wire transfer for that kind of $$.

Thanks - I'll keep doing my research. I'm not looking for a quick sale but interested in getting it sold before the market goes a little more normal.

There's a used TTRS at one of the dealerships that's looking pretty nice.

When I sold my Evo private party, I had the buyer get a bank certified check. I then called the bank to verify the check was legit and for the correct amount.

My brother did the exact same when he sold his Supra.

When I recently sold my GMC truck, I just went with the buyer to his bank and was handed a Certified Cashier's Check. Completed all the paperwork and signed over the vehicle right there.

When I sold my GTR we went to the buyers bank and got a cashiers check. Two checks actually, one to payoff the car and one for the remainder
