Wow! It sounds so good now, and I literally feel a bit more response. (motors stock...)

Anyone thinking of doing this, or are skeptical, just do it. Swiss cheese FTW!

I did before I got a cone-filter. I did feel improvement from stock with the airbox cut up, but I also felt a difference from that with a cone. Sounds better also.

Swiss cheese is usually the first mod I do to a car haha.

Is that where you drill holes in the airbox? I assume you have some kinda screen to keep crap out of there? Has anyone had problems with water getting up there? I'm interested in doing this but if I'm gonna be doing any fun driving this winter I don't want snow to get packed up there and possibly damage something (though I doubt snow being simply packed around the airbox could hydrolock the engine anyway).

Naa, I drilled in the front only. Just behind the head light. Some will drill into the bottom of the box into the wheel well, but I was too afraid of water jumping up there.

I don't have a screen either.

I drove it in the rain for 2 days straight just the other day and had no problems.

I just drilled about 8-10 1 1/2" holes in the front. I would reccomend it.

Maybe i'll try this.

I'll definitely do this when I put in the K&N drop-in filter. I'm all about free mods [up] [:D]

watch the oil on that k&n or you'll fry the MAF

^ +1 good point

i have a K&N, had one on my old car with the holes. I checked it every time I did an oil change.

Watch the oil for what?

I can pull it out and snap a pic.

Oil on the air filter.. If an air/water mixture is to get in it could mess with the filter and let water pass through the box..

Regular checkup's/clean up's/oiling's(sp? [:p]) are a good idea

Hmm.. the maf is more important to me than a small performance gain. If I do it I'll either just do a few holes in the front or not do K&N.

i would say do not do the k&n, our mafs do not like the opil that needs to be put on the filter.

I'll do some more research. You think I should go with an OEM drop-in or go cone filter? I'll def. do the swiss cheese if not going K&N..

check AWE-tuning. they have panel filters specifically for the B5.

you'll be fine with a K&N, but it's up to you.

seach on audiworld under k&n, you will get mixed reviews on this. makes for some great reading.

yea its a matter of choice, but im planning on an intake kit, or custom one anyways, so if you're not planning on it, jus think about it.

I think this mod(link) is a bit different from the one 1 ate T did. Same just different location.

hmmm... makes me wonder...

I've had my K&N for 4 months or so, and this is the first I've heard about them being bad?

any links to this info?

09-20-2006, 02:21 PM
audiworld search it ther. ther is a bunch of info on them..then you can make up your mind

09-20-2006, 02:57 PM
just take an air compressor and spray some of the oil off of the filter before putting it in.

09-20-2006, 03:40 PM
I've had my K&N for about 5k before I went BT and it was installed by the previos owner. Just don't soak it in oil and you shall be fine.
