View Full Version : First time Audi Owner Questions - 2011 A3 TDI

Hey there,

I've been shopping for a new commuter car for a while and though a TDI was always on my radar, I didn't expect I'd pull the trigger on an Audi. But, here we are...I now have a 2011 A3 TDI Premium Plus S Line with 78k miles. I've owned a few BMWs (E36 M3 and 325i, E39 M5, R55 JCW Mini Clubman) and have an old VW (1968 Bus) so I know German cars fairly well but this is my first Audi. After 4 days of ownership, I'm both in love with the car and a bit mystified by a few things. A couple of questions for the forum, if y'all don't mind:

1. While I've owned a diesel truck, this is my first diesel car. Is there anything to be aware of in terms of special procedures to keep in mind? The person I bought it from mentioned leaving the key in "on" for 3-5 seconds to warm up the glow plugs before starting the car on cold mornings. Anything else about warming the car up or anything?
2. The "s tronic" transmission seems fairly strong, but when coming to a stop it almost feels like it's "fighting" the brakes to come to a full stop. I can only compare it to coming to a full stop in 1st gear without the clutch in and a high idle on a manual transmission car/motorcycle. Vague...I know, but any ideas?
3. My commute into the office is 51 miles straight up Highway 1. While there is a bit of elevation change, it's fairly flat with zero traffic so I set the cruise control at 62 and know I'll see my office in an hour. I "only" got an indicated 37.5 mpg which was a bit lower than I anticipated. Does this seem right?
4. The car has pretty good service records over the last two owner's time and I was able to confirm with Audi that it has been serviced at the recommended intervals since new. That said, is there any preventative maintenance I should be planning on with 78k miles on it? I will be adding about 1,400 miles/month to the car.

I'm pretty sure no one cares, but I also want to add my first impression on this car. The day after I got it the serpentine belt snapped (unfortunately I didn't realize that until after I stupidly bought a new battery to deal with the "Intervention Load Management" code I pulled when the A/C stopped working and the battery light came on) so I've already become acquainted with the engine bay, fuses, and onboard computer.

The fit and finish of the car seems very good overall, but I am a bit surprised at how "sparse" it is given it has the navigation, premium plus, sport, and convenience packages. My 2009 Mini Cooper Clubman JCW didn't have much in the way of packages but had things the Audi lacks like push-button start, keyless entry, and heated seats.
While I didn't get the car to autox in, I am surprised at how "slow" it is. It's sluggish off the line until it builds up some RPMs and it has a very vague steering feel compared to most every other car I've owned. I think it will be a great commuter, which was the primary purpose; but I don't know how well it will fill in for the occasional morning backroad drive.

Can't comment on much of the questions since I own a 2.0T but I can confirm that mine does exactly what you described on the transmission fighting the brakes remark. I'm pretty sure mine got worse since I own it so I suspect it's either the software calibrating to my driving (you can reset that BTW, with VCDS or OBD11) or simply the clutch pack that's wearing out.

1. True, about the glowplugs. But the time it needs for heating up will vary, so just look at Your speedo and start the car when glowplug symbol disappear. If it's 0° F or thereabouts I would even warm up the glow plugs twice. Diesels don't love cold.
2. Sounds normal and Your description is spot-on, because essentially Stronic is a robotized manual gearbox with two clutches. It's rougher when moving slowly and in general, because it's trying to guess will You go up the gear or down. It's great and fast when You're simply moving up the gears or down, not when You move down and then up again. To increase the gearbox lifespan I'd keep it in sport mode when in traffic jam, so that it would shift that often and keep guessing Your next gear.
3. You mpg does seem low, It should be getting high forties in normal conditions without stressing about it.
4. No special preventive maintenance for diesel part - business as usual - oil and filters in regular intervals. Just take care of Your s-tronic gearbox - there should be gearbox oil and filter change interval for those (some are sealed for life).

Thanks so much for the insights! Specific to the mpg, any idea of common culprits to check as to why it might not be getting great mpg? The only thing I can think of is that the previous owner put on super sticky Continental Extreme Contacts for some reason. Not exactly low rolling resistance... With cruise control set at 65 mph I'm turning just over 2000 rpm.

When was the last time You got it serviced? Could be a bad fuel filter (these should be replaced regularly on TDi not like TFSi - check your owners manual) or air filters, tire pressure is correct? Could also be a bit because of tires but that probably would knock down only 5 mpg or so. Going from bigger to smaller wheel also would gain a bit of mpg.

I got in the 37-39mpg range when my TDI A3 was stock.

I went down a bit of a rabbit hole with mods on my A3, mostly to make it as reliable as possible, but also to improve power and mpg.

I highly recommend a DSG tune. I went with Malone (since I was going to use their engine tune as well).

Also... Do a full service on it: Fuel filter, DSG fluid/filter, oil, etc. These cars are very sensitive to bad or dirty fuel with the stock high pressure fuel pump. The DSG is an amazing and reliable gearbox, but needs to be serviced with new fluid and filter at least every 40k miles.

Thanks again, all! I got the car last week with 78,600 miles on it, I'm now at 79,100 miles and was planning to call the nearest dealership (35 miles) tomorrow to get an appointment for an 80k mile service. I assume it won't be cheap through the dealer, but I don't know any Audi mechanics near me and I'd rather be sure that the first service I put it through is done right.

Fun fact: I went up 2 PSI on my tires (40>42) to see what would happen and with no other changes I got 41.1 mpg this morning on the way into work. Not sure if there were other factors at play, but cruise control was set at the same speed. If I can reliably get 41 mpg I'd be super happy.

Looking into the Malone stuff now!

Check the label inside driver door for correct pressures - front/rear pressures usually are different.

Doing a service yourself isn't too hard, the most annoying part will be refilling the trans fluid.

You should still be covered under the dieselgate extended warranty, so look that up too.

Here is a link to a forum that has a lot of info on the CBEA/CJAA diesel engines. You have a CBEA.
