Hey guys, I currently have a C7 A6 with all the works.. stage 2 dual pulley, TCU tune, etc. The car is making crazy power but its coming up on 140k miles and is starting to have issues. My next logical step was to go for a '17 or '18 S7 and tune it all the way with DS1. The one issue I'm having with this is even though its going to be a whole new power plant at the end of the day from where I'm sitting in the car its still going to feel like my 2012 A6 when I'm looking at the dashboard. This has led to me to consider other options like the RS5. The exterior looks just as good as an S7 and the interior is miles ahead with the virtual cockpit and just overall newer look. My only hesitation with the RS5 really is just the lack of power compared to the S7. It is a slightly smaller car so the huge power differences between the V8TT and the V6TT might not be as major as expected, but I was wondering if anyone has made a switch from a C7 S7 to the RS5 and had any insight. Thanks!

Realistically, how often did you actually utilise the full power of your A6? As you said, technology has improved lots from 2012 to 2018. Suspect the RS5 size grew to be similar to your A6 and at the HP levels you look like you are wanting to achieve is it really that different, since the stock engines are only 6 HP apart and the RS5 had more torque than the S7.

I switched from my old 2016 C7 S6 with stage 1 ecu tune & larger sway bars to a 2019 RS5.
I love the RS5. It actually accelerates fairly quickly, but does not feel like it. In Sport mode, it just snaps through the gears, without some of the goofy stuff the DSG transmission does. It handles very nice & feels like a small car.
The S6 was like driving a barge compared to RS5 (400 lbs lighter) & parking the RS5 is much easier for tight parking spots.
The S6 with stage 1 tune had great midrange torque & nice rumble, but the RS5 engine is more crisp & revs faster like Porsche engine should.
I highly recommend the RS5. If you want more power, there is an ECU tune available.

I test drove a used C7 RS7 before I bought my RS5 Sportback new..... for me it felt old and big next to the B9 RS5. Yes it was faster, but I came away feeling like the RS5 looked better inside and out. Also handled more to my taste. C7 was a bit to big. One thing not mentioned much on here is gas mileage... I average 22 with mixed use and easily get 26-28 on hwy use. Pretty sure with the V8 the C7 wont come close to that

My old C7 S6 would get 28mpg on a flat freeway, with cruise control at 70mph. Any other conditions the gas mileage was way lower. It never got better than 16mpg in town, usually 13mpg.
The drawbacks for the RS5 SB:
- Glove box is tiny
- The center console storage is limited and does not really close completely.
- There is no place for the jack (comes in a bag).... I changed to a Basser 10" subwoofer in the side panel and made a mounting area for the jack and torque wrench, under the spare tire.
- The DRC adjustable suspension is underdamped and bouncy. I generally use Comfort or Auto (individual) mode for suspension, dynamic is too firm.
- 30s series tires are too low profile for my local streets.
.........I changed the tires from 275/30/20 to 245/40/19, because one of the original 275/30/20 tires was destroyed by a pothole (& more comfortable ride), when the car only had 500 miles.
- The stock B&O subwoofer is anemic. I replaced with a Kicker 43CWRT102 subwoofer (in Basser box) and Kicker 47Key500.1 amplifier.
- the front B&O dash midrange speakers are not great, but replacing the three main speakers with Faitalpro 2-3FE22 & 1-4FE32 (https://www.audiworld.com/forums/audi-a5-s5-rs5-coupe-cabrio-b9-220/replacing-dashboard-speakers-2993379/) speakers in the dash really improves the sound.

So I test drove a 2018 S5 SB and fell in love with the style of the car over the C7 platform. Definitely going to be looking for a B9 going forward. Had a question regarding the turbo lag on the RS5 though. The S5 had good power for a stock car but I noticed is the turbo lag was pretty noticeable. Coming from a supercharged car I'm probably just over reacting lol, but how is the turbo lag on the RS5? About the same or maybe a little better? Also how does an ECU tune affect it?

It's not turbo lag you're feeling on the S5, it's transmission lag from the ZF gearbox. The RS5 has FAR less of it, and was one of the reasons I moved from the "S" to "RS". The RS is not perfect though, and in Comfort it can be laggy as well. Only the ZF in the BMW's are tuned better to eliminate that lag.

I agree, but with RS1, with everything set to Sport, I do not notice any lag at all. It just goes!!

I kept the throttle/shift mode in individual settings at automatic.
I Pull the shifter back into Sport mode 99% of the time after putting it in Drive.... No lag.

I have been using the sport mode more, the only thing I don’t like is that it tends to wind out the gears too much when I don’t want it to.
Otherwise, no lag. It’s all go time.
