View Full Version : 2.8 30v...do they consume oil?

I have a 2.8 30v motor with 60k...it has no leaks at all, nor does it burn oil...yet I am topping it off every 1000 miles or so with a 1/8-1/4 quart. I am using 0-w40. The motor has always had routine oil changes and what not so I cannot imagine it burning oil. I do get on it here and there when I am on the parkway but other than that it is driven calmly. When I take the oil cap off and peek in there the aluminum looks brand new...I'm thinking maybe the thin oil evaporates a little?[confused]

Anybody? Do engines in proper working order consume any oil?

My 99.5 2.8 burns some oil, as does my friends 98 2.8. As far as I know, the V6 does consume more oil, but there are many factors that go into oil consumtion. I use 5-w40

i believe this topic was discussed some time ago, and if i remember correctly the answer is yes. i know i have to top mine off every so often... but i do seem to have a very small leak at times as well.

For the 2.8,
I use a hi-mi oil to keep the seals nice. GTX HM seems to be the best.
10w-40 for summer and 5w-30 for winter. They are thick for their stated
grade, blend them up or down a lil. I get a 5q jug of each grade and fill
with the appropriate one, top-off with the other.

And I do have to top off every once in a while.

All engines consume some oil. All 2.8s and 1.8s leak oil too... cam adjuster seals, valve cover gaskets, head check balls, etc.

I might be the unpopular one after I say this but oh well.

It might be the 0w-40 thats killin ya.

I put in 0-40 (M1) in my 1.8 and had to add to it 1000 miles before I was due for an oil change.

After that, I put in 5-30 and have had NO problems what-so-ever. That baby is kept at the top right up until I change it.

Yeah I'm going to swap to 5w-30 next change...
