View Full Version : Who has used launch control on a 6MT?

I've got a '15 S4 6MT with dual pulleys, a Merc Racing HX, an 034 tune, and Firestone Indy 500 tires. I recently had the weak stock clutch replaced with a Ringer Racing stage 4 with lightened aluminum flywheel and, after about a thousand break-in miles, I decided to try the 034 launch control. At idle, I depressed the clutch, put the shifter into first, and matted the throttle. The RPM climbed to 2500, the default, and I released the clutch by lifting my foot as quickly as I could. Not as quick of an engagement as sidestepping the clutch, but more aggressive than a dog-poop engagement. The motor bogged to around 1000RPM, and then the car accelerated.

I then tried again at 3500RPM, and 4000RPM, and the same thing happened. Too much traction, the motor bogged, and then the car accelerated. Am I doing something wrong?

When driving briskly, the car feels like it is making the power that it should. I've seen threads where people with comparable mods talk about having to go with drag radials to be able to launch well, so I feel like the car should have enough power to spin the tires, even if they are sticky summer tires. Shouldn't it?

Did you hold the ACS button down for like 3ish+ seconds to turn off all the traction and stability controls?

No, I just pressed the little button on the center of the dash that has the picture of the car with the squiggly tire marks behind it, that says off next to that. I assumed that was all that was needed to disable traction control as the gauge cluster displays something about "traction restricted" when I do so, and the little yellow light that is a picture of the car with squiggly lines shows up on the dash as well. Am I doing it wrong?

Heads up on turning off ESC (3+ second hold and it will say ESC OFF - if you quick-push the button it'll toggle between ON and SPORT)... You would imagine that an AWD would be hard to lose control of; but, it isn't. I had ESC off fully when I got the car, I went into a turn of 5 open lanes, I had it in 1st and I punched it.

The roads were slick; but, I wanted to break the car loose... Oh boy, did I?

I managed to fishtail the car across 3 of those 5 lanes and it definitely felt unstable and loosely swinging. It really surprised me.

When ESC is off, it means off.

Did you pull the cruise control stalk to activate the advanced launch control? It should sound like a two step while you hold the rpms and and launch in boost. I have PS4S tires and even 2500rpm will make all 4 spin

I'm doing the catalytic-converter-safe version of launch control, not the ignition cut version. Maybe that's it? Not enough boost so not enough power to spin the tires?

I haven't tried launching the car without the 034 launch control. If I recall correctly, it's "3000RPM, then mash the throttle while quickly releasing the clutch"?

Gotcha. Yeah, I had it in "sport", not Off. But even with it "off", a 4500 rpm launch bogs.

I didn’t even know launch control was an option with a manual in these. I’m guessing it just holds the revs at a certain RPM until you drop the clutch?

There is no launch control with the 6MTs. You are correct

OP has a a 034 tune, which adds a bit of a launch control to these cars.

I tried launching using my feet as launch control, and guess what.. it worked! Staged at 2500rpm, then mashed the throttle while quickly releasing the clutch. Car hooked up around 3500rpm and scooted.

My guess is that the 034 "safe" launch control is activated by closing the throttle, and that when the clutch is release, the throttle doesn't open quickly enough so the engine bogs because it's sitting at 1/16 throttle (or whatever the throttle position is to be able to hold launch rpm). I bet if I used the ignition cut launch control, it would work properly. But.. my S4 still has its stock cats and the 034 instructions say to definitely NOT use the ignition cut launch control if your car still has cats.

034 has been offering launch control for us folks that have the 3 pedal system for quite some time now. I'm curious- Is having launch control for a B8.5 S4 so far-fetched for this platform?
If so, why?
