Hello,

Im sure I will get some "search" burns but I have looked and havent found what I was looking for yet so wanted to get some updated suggestions. I recently purchased a 2011 S4 and have always used Mobile-1 so want to get the first oil change under way. On my BMW I used 0w40 and I see mixed messages here. I live in middle TN so the weather is a bit bi-polar at times with the cold and hot swings. Will 0w40 be ok year round or would you suggest spending extra on the 5w40 mix like the factory suggest?

Thanks,

I live in PNW and use 0w40, with 82K on the odometer and haven't encountered any issues.

0w40 Mobil 1 Euro will be 100% ok.

Fun fact, the new 5W40 Mobil 1 Euro has a higher HTHS at 3.8, which would be good if you have a heavy foot.

Really, don't sweat the winter weight too much if you're in TN. Heck, if you were in Greenland, I still wouldn't sweat it.

When you get to the science between 0W and 5W, you'd get a chuckle as to what winter temp rating they're good for and see that you'll never see those temps, ever.

But if you were to pick between 0W40 Mobil 1 Euro and 5W40 Mobil 1 Euro:

0W40 Mobil 1 Euro has better base oils, more certs from other car manufacturers.

5W40, you can now find that in your local walmart or car parts store much much easier. Mobil 1 created the 5W40 line to compete against Castrol Edge 5W40 Euro. Why? Because people don't know if it's ok to use 0W instead of 5W, and they just follow the manual which will always say 5W40.

VW502 is the certification you're looking for. Just about every 40 viscosity Euro oil has it.

Live in Knoxville, TN and own/owned 2 S4 and an S5, all 3.0T. As mentioned in previous post, 0/40, 5/40, or 5/50 will all work fine in TN climates. I prefer Mobil 1 and Walmart sells 5 qt container for around $22 ea. Other oils are also fine in these ranges, especially in the mild winters and hot summers of TN.

A lot of us like LiquiMoly high tech 5w-40 or Motul 8100 excess 5w-40. It doesn’t really matter though. Mobil 1 0w-40 euro formula will work, or any other top rated euro oil. I use LiquiMoly. Just a personal preference.

I've been running Amsoil Signature Series 0w-40. Excellent cold start protection.

Thanks for all the input and not burning the new guy. I now wish I didnt give away the 2 full 0w40 5qt bottles away with the BMW... Should have done my research first.

These items make the oil change much easier...and neater.

Funnel that twist-locks to the oil fill hole on the valve cover of the 3.0T....makes filling easier and mess-risk-free.

I use Mobil-1 0W-40 Euro for all my VW/Audi vehicles. And you will need the OEM filter: Mann HU 7029z

You spoke too soon. Search! Yours was insufficient.

Now with that out of the way, welcome to Audi and Audizine! The 3.0 SC engine is a great, established platform with established issues. Pay attention to those and you will be quite pleased. Audizine is a wealth of information and most topics have been covered. The diligence of some amazes me. In fact, over the last month, someone just figured out how to turn off the "engine running/ door open" alarm after nearly a decade of research.

I figured it out, although I don’t know if I was the first one. I made a post on the B8/B8.5 S4 Network on Facebook.

I use this item to remove the oil https://www.tooldiscounter.com/product/mityvac-fluid-evacuator-plus-23-gal-88-l-mit7201 and I order my oil from FCPEuro. You can return the oil and they credit your account for the used oil. I did two oil changes with filters, HVAC fiter and wiper blades. Even with the cost of return shipping my total out of pocket was $60.00.

For Oil Exactors - check out Extoil - they are nice - been really happy with my 6 liter version - the vacuum gauge is nice feature & high quality tubes / seals.

I support the extractor method but just as a note do not get a unit with low quality or soft flexible tubes https://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/925863-Oil-extractor-tube-stuck
