View Full Version : ABS & ASR malfunction lights - Need Help!

Anybody who is familiar with the workings of Fronttrak FWD, I could sure use a hand. I replaced my rear rotors and brake pads this weekend. Everything went on and off without a hitch, I didn't leave anything off or sever anything I shouldn't have...I put the wheels back on, let her down, and go to drive off...and I get the rapid blinking of the ASR light and the car starts bucking like a wild bronco at 10 mph as it kicks in! I can't go more than a few mph.

Naturally, I disasble ASR and low and behold I get a solid ABS light...and a solid ASR light. The only thing I can come up with is that I did not bleed the brakes when I changed rotors & pads, and I had the cap off the brake fluid resevoir while doing the pads, so maybe I got an air bubble in the line?? What could cause these warning lights? I do not have a VAG-COM....any ideas?

Check the ABS sensors or the ABS ring. Both ASR and ABS use these sensors to check for any speed diffrential. From your discription, looks like the computer thinks the rears are slower than the fronts (front are slipping) and the buckling you are describing is ASR trying to stabilize the fronts using brake.

My guess is that the replacement rotors did not have the ABS rings, you probably need to transfer the old one.

I don't believe the rear rotors on a FWD TT house the ABS rings...

What procedure did you use for resetting the rear caliper pistons? Did you check to make sure the e-brake engaged properly when you were done? Your problem could have been caused by several things. For future reference, whenever you replace pads you should bleed the brakes. Resetting the pistons as much as you need to in the rear pushing a lot of the filthy brake fluid that accumulates in the caliper into the lines, and can really gum things up. It's always better to bleed the brakes.
