Trans Cooler Mod

Has anyone looked into this or gave it a shot with positive outlook? The guy said on YT that it should fit a S4, but hasn’t tried it yet. I’m sure this would help out with saving the mechatronic unit with a good fluid change frequently with stock or higher power units. I just haven’t seen much talk about trans cooler for these cars, so I’m not sure if it’s good investment or not.

Might help if the trans is subjected to a hard use and the stock cooler in the radiator can’t keep up, but then why not just get a cheap generic trans cooler from summit racing, jegs etc and hook it up to the trans hard lines. For daily use when the trans doesn’t think it’s overheating, who knows. There’s a valve in the mechatronic unit which is sort of like a thermostat and if you hook up a larger radiator, the trans won’t get itself cooler than it thinks it needs. Now when that valve is worn then it won’t cool itself even with bigger radiator.

I’m not up to par on my DSG knowledge so I was unknown about an internal thermostat. Is it mechanical or electronically controlled? Yes a generic auxiliary cooler would be a much cheaper option, but then again to the point is, I just don’t see much about people doing transmission coolers for these cars. I don’t know if it’s been found out to not be needed or nobody has really shed light on it. I think it’s been know that the heat and long fluid life kills the mechatronic unit and it doesn’t help clutch life either, so in a high power car for track, drag, or even daily cooler temps wouldn’t be a benefit? Maybe there’s a threshold where the DSG needs to be hot enough for efficiency and too cool could potentially be bad.

One guy is running this on a RS5 and said he had 15-20F cooler temps constantly*

Fwiw, stand-alone cooler won’t hurt at least. That rs5 seems to be driven in TX so it might help there because perhaps stock cooling is not completely adequate for 100F ambient temps. Yes, the valve is electronically controlled, cooling valve.

I’ll see if there’s more discussion on it before I think about one. I’m not looking to do one just yet but I figured a talk on them wouldn’t hurt.

That’s good to know. Maybe a TCU tune changes when that t stat opens and closes thus it could help with cooling on a auxiliary cooler. The car I was referring to is a RS5 in Alberta actually.

My question would be are you having issues with trans temp? If it's within the normal operating range, then it really won't help anything. If you road race the car, then maybe worth it, for a street driven car I doubt it would provide any real benefit.

Nothing to do with oil cooler but I have always wondered how much more space their cross/crash bar provided. I can see air flow being better with it but I have always wanted to find away to throw some high output electric fans on front of the merc heat exchange?

I’m not having issues with trans temp. I’m just making discussion about a extra cooler and seeing what else could help the platform. As stated prior it could possibly help with any internal failures with high HP cars in whatever scenario (even daily cars get “beat on”), but I would think too as mileage climbs up it probably becomes more helpful to keep things cooler rather than hotter. I just don’t see much talk about it, so I’m not sure the worth of this mod.

I thought that too. Maybe the crash bar is what really helps cool more than extra fluid capacity and a heat transfer? I suppose though a guy would have to use some smaller fans to fit and maybe that’ll be enough to help push more air when not driving at higher speeds.

A side by side comparison would be nice. Hard to fully judge it by pics and eye balling. That’s up to the installer. I’d feel hesitant about it too, but anything could happen in a front end impact. “Install at your own risk” is probably shoved into the packaging somewhere. Although they would’ve had to think of safety at some point with a crash bar replacement piece.
