View Full Version : B8 Sport diff vs B8.5 (both manual trans)

I'm considering B8/8.5 S4 manuals for my next car. The way I understand it, there isn't much of a difference between the two mechanically if you're shopping for a manual trans. However, the one noticeable difference is that the B8.5 is standard with an actual torque vectoring system right? How does it compare to the B8 sport diff? I ask because I'm not that picky on the exterior/interior differences, so the more important thing for my car search is going to be which one is set up to corner better.

EDIT: Right after I posted this I saw that FCPEURO actually explained: the B8.5 S4 features the much more advanced Audi Crown center differential and optional rear Sport diff, with advanced torque vectoring.

So if I understand correctly, the largest difference between the two is the crown center differential? Which, I assume, allows f/r torque vectoring as IN ADDITION to the side-to-side torque vectoring allowed by the rear sport diff?

And was the sport diff standard on the b8.5 or also an option?

So much wrong in that post.

The 0BF sport rear diff was optional on the B8.0 and the B8.5 S4. So any specific S4 you're looking at may or may not have it. If it doesn't, it'll have the 0BC open rear diff.
The front diff is always an open diff.
The center diff is always going to be a Torsen, not a Crown. Just maybe there might be a small window of S4 MY11 production until fall of '10 that might have had 0B5 center diff, which is a Crown. But all you're getting with that is extra maintenance costs. It's easy bet that all US B8 S4 of any MY have a Torsen.

Suggest you google search for the audi order guide for the model year you're considering and look at what was actually being sold and how components were packaged.

So there isn't really a handling benefit to having the crown center diff?

The crown gear simply does not exist. smac and I and others have beat this subject to death searching for the crown gear diff. I’ve bought and disassembled many transmission, including late B8.5 DSGs, and have not found one. The manual transmission 100% will never have a crown gear. Like smac said, maybe just maybe there’s a early B8 with it, but all signs point to no.

So just get one with the Sport Diff (8 and 8.5 are the same), and check out my differential offerings here. If you really want a good handling car, the front LSD is the biggest gain you can get. https://www.jxbperformance.com/products?tag=Differential

I'm a little confused - are you saying that B8.5 MT also never had a crown gear? Or just the B8

no thx

B8.5 + JXB LSDs. Sport diff being a must have feature is officially dead

I wouldn't really call it dead considering getting a sport diff-optioned car doesn't cost much more and getting aftermarket LSDs costs way more

I definitely understand getting an aftermarket one for the front though.

Just to clarify too, I'm budgeting around 20,000 for a car give or take, so a b8.5 is a bit of a stretch unless it's higher miles.

Whoops started typing this and walked away.

No manual transmission car ever got a crown gear. The manual is 0B4 PN. The crown gear came on s-tronic cars only (0B5 PN transmissions) with a 0B5 PN on the diff. We as a community are 99% sure it only ever came on the RS5.

(and RS4, which we didn't see state side; and DSG equipped A4 allroad and Q5 maybe, which we also didn't see state side)

edit: confirmed, will work based on code MKY

resurrecting this: so will a sports diff from a b8.5 MT work in a b8 MT? I was able to source one for cheap just need to confirm compatibility before pulling the trigger

The B8.5 0BFs are listed as well for B8.0. MKY was around before B8.0 ended, and it carried on for B8.5.

Ya I currently have JKQ which matches the gearing of MKY

Is MKY same as MKK?

I assume you mean something other than MKK, as MKK seems to be some Seat transmission for a 102hp 1.6L engine.

MKX? MKX is also a type 0BF sport diff like the MKY, but they are different final drive ratios. MKX is 35:9 (3.889), MKY is 37:10 (3.700).
