Parking Brake / Rear Pads activating randomly

This last week or so, my 2013 S4 DSG has suddenly started seemingly activating the rear brakes (obvious from the sound) and flashing the headlights/taillights at the same time. It will happen when a door / trunk / hood is opened or closed, etc (all the actions that normally activate the HE coolant pump).

I assume that this is some sort of message, but I can't find it anywhere and everything seems to be working normal otherwise. Could it be a brake pad warning? Any other ideas?

Do you normally use your parking brake?

Periodically, but not very often. Usually only if I'm parked on a hill.

If you don't use your parking brake, or very infrequently, the Parking Brake Module will activate itself every once in a while to adjust the parking brake clearance, to compensate for pad wear.

Makes sense. But its doing it everyday, multiple times. Visually, I have full pads on the outside of the wheel. I guess that I need to get under and see the inside pads.

Every day, multiple times seems excessive....something is wrong.
