As the title states. I have a CEL with code P2185 for the coolant temperature sensor. The dealer will not cover under the TDI extended warranty and Audi America not helpful. As per the warranty language for coverage "The On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system, and any malfunctions detected by the OBD system." my understanding is that a CEL is a detected malfunction. And I feel that the engine coolant system definitely has to do with the engine.
So I have a CEL. Does anyone else have issues with a coverage denial when the CEL is on? Any suggestions?
Thanks
Hmm that is an interesting one...
I wonder if it is a matter of semantics?
It is specifically an extended emissions warranty. Not just a general bumper-to-bumper warranty extension for everything.
And while it states that "The On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system, any malfunctions detected by the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system other than those related to the transmission" is covered, since it is an emissions warranty it may imply that it is only related to emissions malfunctions or emissions software related issues, and not failure of a coolant sensor since they were not specified in the covered parts list.
I'm sure they sent a more comprehensive list of what exactly is covered to owners than what can be found just by searching.
You could try to argue that a faulty coolant sensor causes poor emissions, but they probably have a legal team to shut that door too.
Hopefully someone with more knowledge on the matter can help more.
Sorry.

Too legal for me. At the top of the Audi USA website is a link for "TDI Settlement" and eventually one gets to the court documents. Amended Exhibit 3 is a document titled "Volkswagen 3.0-Liter Diesel Emissions Class Action Settlement" and buried in that is the following: "The “Reduced Emissions Modification Extended Warranty” is a warranty that will apply to all vehicles that receive a Reduced Emissions Modification. It will cover all replaced components that are part of the Reduced Emissions Modification, any component that the EPA and CARB determine reasonably could be impacted by effects of the Reduced Emissions Modification, and the engine sub-assembly (which consists of the assembled block, crankshaft, cylinder head, camshaft, and valve train). The Reduced Emissions Modification Extended Warranty will extend to all parts and labor related to the covered components, and it also will cover the cost or provision of a loaner vehicle for warranty service lasting longer than three hours.". There is also a Warranty Booklet with more detail that was supposedly sent to all owners. Sure looks like gk1 is correct that coverage is limited to emissions related stuff.

Subbing for outcome.

The quick reading I just did says emissions component related components only. A coolant sensor is not related to emissions.
Looks like you can pick it up for about $10 aftermarket. Afraid to see what Audi is gonna fleece you for on it.
