I just got a steering wheel for my 2012 A7 off of ebay. Instead of the * button it has a button with an "M" and some gears, it changes between Drive and Manual. Is there a way to reprogram this button to skip track like the * button? Thanks for any info.

That is an a8 steering wheel i believe, so it may require some hardwiring for it to function as a programmable button

Unfortunately the only way to get your skip back is to change the actual button back to the *.

I think you should be able to swap the buttons over from your old wheel as long as they fit which they should

My old wheel didn't have paddle shift.

hmm interesting :) been looking for a "D-S-M" toggle button for years. If only i knew what canbus command that button sends!
For what it is worth, yes you will need a Lin bus chip in your steeringwheel to convert the factory "M gear" command into "skip track" command. My friends at embrace.eu can help you out if wanted.

NO. All of the buttons that go in that position on Audi wheels have a chip in them that send out different signals. To get different function you have to change the hardware.

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between these two sets of buttons?

Yeah, for C7, looking at them they look identical despite different part #'s and much different pricing.

Kinda off in the weeds here as far as what the correct part number is since this seems like an A8 wheel in an A7- no idea if the A8 wheel will be happy with A7 buttons, maybe someone else knows. The first part number seems to be for a four spoke A7 wheel, not sure about the second since a quick search doesn't show any fitments. This may be useful for tracking down the correct part number for the relevant options- https://www.audiusaparts.com/v-2012-audi-a7-quattro--base--3-0l-v6-gas/steering--steering-wheel-and-trim

Hmmm wild shot but are there more people who ever tested the a8/m gear buttons on their car?
So i bought a second hand set to extract the linbus code (we have it now) but when we inject that code it plays the 'navigation not active' command (default * command). Strange thing is, it is definatly a different code then the original * linbus code (code we compaired between different steeringwheels with * button and identical). We did inject it onto the powertrain canbus....and tried instrument canbus aswell (both types share the steeringwheel slipring/linbus module).
Something starts to tell me it might be gearbox type related. Markdjr has ZF if not mistaken (where it works), but if not mistaken also not the same ZF as the a8 has. I has S6 so completly different gearbox and i suppose different gearbox module that maybe simply doesn't support that command.
Grrr....if only it was all that easy! :)

Grrr....if only it was all that easy! :)It's is mechanically the same but for anyone who's ever driven an a8 the shifter is not mechanical like it is on our cars it's more similar to the electronic one found on some FCA products
