View Full Version : Convince me (if you can) and you win! Next step from B8 S4?

I sold my 2012 S4 last year in September and have been away on assignment ever since with the plan of buying a new Audi sometime this year.

My S4 was the best car I've ever owned and often regret selling it, but know that it was going to sit and not be driven for nearly 12 months before I get home - and depreciate - and that I'd like something with a few more modern features (streaming audio). It was DP Stg 2 and loved the heck out of it... Ibis white, self-detailed regularly to a gleaming beauty, clean inside and out, sweet supercharger whine and a blast to drive, summer or winter!

Since then, I have driven a 2018 S6, 2020 S6, 2015 RS5, 2021 RS5, 2020 S4.

I originally thought that a C 7.5 S6 was my answer, but I so much prefer the modern MMI and was quite disappointed with stock performance of the S6 that I started shopping either a 2021 S6 or an RS5 (that and the Bose system sucks compared to B&O... and yes, I know it sounds nuts to be 'disappointed' with a 450hp V8, but my DP Stg2 S4 was faster!) I drove both and am leaning towards the 2021 RS5, again being disappointed with the performance of the S6. I wish I could get the dual screens of the S6 in an RS5 and my answer would be obvious... I am on the brink of ordering a 2021 RS5 sportback. My major concern being lack of headroom for tuning like the previous gen S6 had or even the gains seen in a B8/8.5 S4 for so much less money.

Where do I go from here... Admittedly, I haven't driven a tuned C7.5 S6 and I KNOW they rip... 10 sec car with $10k or less in tuning? I could get behind that... however... I do also like the idea of owning a brand new RS5 and having the warranty and performance right off the bat (not a tuned S6, but close... similar to the S4 stg2, I feel, plus the modern MMI).

This will be my daily driver. Things I have yet to consider would be a '21 RS3 (when available) or a used RS7.

Lastly, my "safe" option would just be a brand new S4 and just settle for a bit less performance but save myself $20k and tune when practical.

What say ye? Prove to me what I should get and you win the major award (think leg lamp, but more in a non-tangible, pretend, make-believe sort of major award? ie, nothing but sense of satisfaction)

I'd buy a F90 M5

I'd buy a F90 M5

If it had an Audi interior, I might agree. Test drove one, didn't impress me enough (especially for the cost).

Next....

Imo the 2 extra doors grosses me out [emoji2957]. I would go with rs5 none sportback. B8.5. Throw a supercharger on that v8.
But if you want the 2021 I say go for the rs5. Looks great and it will be tunable to make some good gains

we are the borg! resistance is futile.

4-door is basically mandatory. Family of 4 here and am not going to deal with a coupe. I respect the opinion, however, and if didn't have kids would be a good option!

What do you mean by "throw a supercharger on that V8?"

Excellent argument with a LOT of good points! Thank you for your response and taking the time to read / reply to my original thread. Well thought out and well stated!

If you require the "tech" and want an Audi you're pretty much forced into a 2020 or later car. While the RS3 is fun to drive it is a far different car than the others you've listed....not sure where you priorities lie.

Quote frankly the B9 S4 is a disappointment to drive...hate the drive train and the way power is delivered. Tuning mighy help but the transmission is unsatisfying.

B9 S5 is like the S4, and the RS5 is certainly faster, it isnt special....like the B8.5 RS5.

Havent tried the new S7or RS7 simply bc of size and way too much technology that I'll never use, at least for me.

I did a similar process but i wasnt looking gor tge latest technology nor the fastest car....but wanted a well rounded car that had just enough tech, a torquey and flexible drive train, and less of the origami styling of the latest creations from Audi. Yep, bought the last of the B8.5 2017 S5 coupes....and found that the new cars (Bmw, Merc and Audi) just lack the driving feel, prettier styling and overall simplicity. Yes the tech is old....but meets my needs.

Good luck on the search.

Comments came in before you said you needed 4 doors. Nice to know that. Also do you need Awd? Have you narrowed it down to Audi only? Alfa quadrifolglio would be worth a test drive. Panamera turbo.

Lastly, there are updated aftermarket mmi options.

What do you mean by "throw a supercharger on that V8?"Well supposedly jhmotorsports is working on a supercharger for the b8.5.
But you are planning on getting the ttv6 or the b9.
Anyhow I say go for the rs5. Cant go wrong with that.
But it's nice to have a ttv8 rs7. Tough choices

we are the borg! resistance is futile.

If the car is going to be your daily and you aren't impressed with the stock power vs your dp s4 then (If I were you) whichever car you decide on just put a stage 1 tune on it and call it a day. I know a few guys at the drag strip I go to that run s8's and they're running flat 11's consistently, 10.9's if they're lucky.

If I had an exponential amount of income to spend on an Audi and had a family I'd buy the older C7.5 S6. With a stage 1 tune you will already be in the 11's, most likely mid-high 11's. So that would be arguably just as fast as a DP set up on pump gas.
Unitronic and Apr both offer tunes for the platform so it doesn't take much searching to find what your looking for in the aftermarket department.

When talking about something like the MMI it's really just down to the person, for me (Opinion) as long as the audio system is good like a B&O in mine, and has non digital gauges, I'm a happy camper. I like hearing my car over half the time anyway.
