View Full Version : Is APR still competitive in the tuning game for the B8 S4?

Is APR still active in the tuning game as far as our S4s are concerned? I was discussing tunes with a friend who used to own an APR-tuned Golf R, and he kept talking about how great APR was. I told him that I thought APR was out of the running for the B8s because nothing much seems to ever be posted on the forums, and if they weren't, that APR was by far the most-expensive option. So he went browsing and sent my APR's B8 page: https://www.goapr.com/products/software/ecu_upgrade/parts/ECU-30T-EA837-SIM85
I could have sworn that when I was tune shopping a couple of years ago, a Stage 1 tune was a thousand bucks or so, the Stage 2 tune was around $1250, and the Stage 2+ was another hunnit fitty or so on top of that. Now Stage 1 is $600, Stage 2 is $750, and Stage 2+ is $900. Not exactly cheap, per se, but significantly cheaper than before and undercutting all of the other tune vendors by a couple hundred bucks or more.
So APR has gotten competitive, price-wise, but what about their tunes? How do they perform, and are they getting updated periodically?
Now, to be fair, the "drive to the dealer to get flashed" is pretty much a deal breaker because the closest APR dealer is at least two hours away, but I'm curious nonetheless.

APR changed their prices Q3 of 2020.
I have APR on my C7 A6. It seems comparable to everything else as far as times.
They seem to focus more on current model cars than previous models.

The only thing they are claiming may change is the possibility of adding flash from home at some point.
It's a great tune, no need to for updates because it's a finished product. If you can live with flashing at the dealer and no E40 file then it's a steal at the price point they have it now.

no specific e40 file isnt a game changer.
100oct file on e35 is fun as hell (with an upgraded hpfp of course)

Having to go to the dealer to flash is a big negative for a lot of people in my opinion. Pretty much all other companies allow you to flash and change maps from home.

The biggest thing for an E40 or e30 dedicated file is your fueling. You can runs 103 or 104 file, but are relying on the ECU to adjust fueling, and it is going to have to adjust a lot, but it can do it within reason.
Having a base tune that includes proper fueling for ethanol is a much better option.

Just got an APR stage 1 flash on Monday. I went ahead and purchased a cheetah able for around $140 so UPS motorsporrs could tune the car remotely. Everything went smooth, the tune took less than 15 minutes. Car pulls absurdly hard now.

How much did UPS charge for the service?

I’m going stage ll single pulley in the next few weeks and I will be going with another tuning company. Who I’m going with doesn’t really matter cause the topic is if APR is still in the game. Tons of threads on comparing tunes and this is not one of them.
I always wanted an APR car. MY buddy had a built b7 A4 Avant that was all APR and it was amazing. I also heard APR isn’t developing much else for the b8 S4 and they don’t support e40. My dealer a half hr away offers all the major tuners including APR so it’s not the flash at home that swayed me. I think because they are all so close in results it was the customer service with the one I selected that made it easy for me.

How much did UPS charge for the service? It was part of the $600 stage 1. All in with the cheetah cable I think it was around $750-780.

I see you are in a colder climate like me in Toronto. I have a UNITRONIC (Stage 1) for that reason - excellent in cold weather - APR reportedly less so. Cost me $CDN1100 installed - taking her to 414HP plus more torque than I thought possible. I upgraded to Stoptech ST360's - 6 pot BBKs to handle the power. Very happy with Unitronic. You won't go wrong with either - brings the 3.0T to life.

I have had a great APR experience. Went Stage I then Stage II dual pulley. Results plus stock level of refinement... maybe even more refined.
Three complaints:
1) Price was very high.. I did it pre-Q3 2020 AND I live in Italy so I pay hefty premiums.
2) Nearest APR dealer is/was 2 hours away
3) Their TCU tune is not available for my tranny (2010) without a special computer box thingy (tool) and the only one that exists in Europe is at the APR importer in Greece.
Things that offset those complaints:
1) I’m over the price thing. I paid.. 🤷🏻*♂️
2) I’m over the driving there and back - two and done ... unless I go UC..But I honestly don’t mind a two hour cruise in my S4
3) I am living without the TCU tune just fine
At those reduced prices, I highly recommend. Quality stuff.

Is APR still "active" on the platform? It doesn't appear so, they have moved on from the platform it seems. 034 and IE seem to still be working on this platform.
I have APR and have been happy with it but I do get some FOMO when I see the other two major tuners still making updates and changes to their tunes.

From what I’ve read... they are very reputable. Funny you should bring up the pricing because today I looked at REVOS site... and an ECU & TCU is only 1400 now. I think the sale they started for the christmas season got too competitive... don’t forget EPL!
