View Full Version : No oil temp on lap timer after DIS replacement

I’ve had the lap timer enabled since I bought the car two years ago and the oil temp has displayed at the top of the screen the whole time. Separately, the DIS has been flaky in that the screen will go completely dark for minutes, hours or even days at seemingly random times, but usually in colder weather.

I’ve had a new DIS (refurnished unit from Speedo Solutions) sitting on the shelf for over a year and finally got around to installing it today. It works great and seems to have the same look and functionality as before, except the lap timer screen now displays the radio station at the top instead of oil temp. I don’t remember having to configure it to display oil temp originally. Am I missing something in the setup or does my new DIS possibly just have different firmware?

Lap timer is something people turn on with coding normally. Maybe you need to recode?

Right, I coded it with OBD11 a while back, but the lap timer is still there. In addition to the oil temp being replaced with the radio station, the bottom of the screen now says “Laptimer” while I’m pretty sure the old screen just said “Lap”.

Try coding it again and see if that changes anything. If not, might want to contact them about the issue

Agreed, decode and re-code it again.

Has anyone been able to enable the lap timer and oil temp with a Schwaben scanner/tool? I have been able to code other items, but I can't find this.

Thanks guys. I’ll try decoding and recoding, as well as reach out to the guy at Speedo Solutions to see if he has any advice.

Noticed another difference tonight. The efficiency screen (or whatever it’s called) that focuses on fuel economy and tips is now gone. As in that screen now doesn’t exist in the rotation at all. This has to be different firmware...the invoice from Speedo Solutions says the screen is for A4/S4/Q5, so there must have been slight differences between the models.

Just closing the loop on this. When I contacted Tom at Speedometer Solutions, he had never had anyone approach him with this complaint, but said that the control board from my original screen could be swapped into the new LCD assembly and that should bring back the data/screens that I had originally. Also said that the initial issue I had with the screen going dark is almost always an issue with the LCD itself and not the board, so swapping boards should be fine as far as not bringing back the screen going dark issue.

Swapping the board was easy and very intuitive once you get the screen out of the instrument cluster. The oil temp is now back on the Lap Timer screen again and the fuel economy screen is back, too! Here are a few pics for anyone’s future reference:
